Chondrule density in primitive matrix

This 13.67-gram slice reveals the characteristic structure of CO3 carbonaceous chondrites: small, tightly packed chondrules suspended in a fine-grained matrix. The slice format provides direct visual access to dozens of individual chondrules, each representing a discrete melting event in the solar nebula. The dark matrix material contains the same volatile-rich compounds and presolar grains that make CO chondrites essential to understanding early solar system chemistry.

The slice measures substantial enough for detailed examination while remaining accessible for collectors building primitive meteorite reference collections. Surface preparation reveals chondrule boundaries and matrix texture without obscuring the specimen's natural composition.

Structure and features

CO chondrites derive their designation from the type specimen that fell in Ornans, France in 1868. This group exhibits the smallest average chondrule size among ordinary chondrites, typically 150 micrometers in diameter, creating the dense packing visible throughout this slice. The Type 3 petrologic grade confirms minimal thermal alteration since accretion, meaning the minerals and organic compounds present retain their original nebular states.

Refractory calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) appear as lighter-toned irregular shapes within the matrix. These inclusions formed at temperatures exceeding 1,300 degrees Celsius in the innermost regions of the protoplanetary disk before being transported outward and incorporated into the parent asteroid. The matrix itself contains phyllosilicates, magnetite, and organic compounds that formed at much lower temperatures, demonstrating the heterogeneous mixing that characterized the early solar nebula.

Discovery and provenance

NWA 17916 was recovered in 2025 as two stones totaling 742.17 grams in the Tindouf region of Algeria. The specimens display brown coloration with desert varnished fusion crust, consistent with extended terrestrial residence in arid conditions while remaining fresh enough to preserve primitive carbonaceous chondrite features.

Classification was performed by Jose Garcia of ADARA (Petrography and Curation of Astromaterials, Canary Islands, Spain). The type specimen of 20.35 grams is held by MUNA (Museo de la Naturaleza y Arqueologia, Tenerife, Spain), with three thin sections retained at ADARA. The main mass is held by Brian McDonald of Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. The classification was approved 14 September 2025 and published in Meteoritical Bulletin 114.

Petrographic analysis confirmed the CO3 designation through mineral composition, magnetic susceptibility (4.39), and chondrule diameter measurements. Mean chondrule diameter is 247 plus or minus 116 micrometers across 36 measurements, with CAIs averaging 332 plus or minus 102 micrometers. Olivine compositions of Fa 18.2 and low-calcium pyroxene of Fs 4.7 fall within the established CO3 range, and weathering is graded low.

Scientific context

CO chondrites formed in the outer asteroid belt approximately 4.567 billion years ago, capturing a mixture of high-temperature condensates and low-temperature ices and organics. The parent body accreted quickly enough to avoid significant heating from radioactive decay, preserving the primitive composition. This makes CO3 specimens like NWA 17916 critical for understanding the chemical and isotopic inventory available during planet formation.

Studies of CO chondrites have identified presolar silicon carbide and graphite grains, literal stardust older than the solar system itself, embedded in the matrix. The organic compounds include amino acids and other prebiotic molecules, supporting the hypothesis that carbonaceous chondrites delivered the chemical building blocks of life to the early Earth.

Frequently asked questions

Is this meteorite authenticated? Yes. NWA 17916 is classified as CO3 in the Meteoritical Bulletin. The official classification record is publicly available through the Meteoritical Society database.

What makes CO chondrites special? CO chondrites preserve the most primitive material from the early solar system, including presolar grains, CAIs, and organic compounds. Their small, tightly packed chondrules and abundant inclusions make them especially valued by researchers and collectors.

How rare is this classification? CO chondrites represent approximately 1 percent of all observed meteorite falls, making them considerably less common than ordinary chondrites in both research collections and the private market.

How was the slice prepared? The specimen was cut using a precision diamond saw and the cut surface was polished to reveal the internal chondrule and matrix structure. This preparation allows direct visual examination without obscuring the primitive composition.

Is shipping insured? Yes. All specimens ship fully insured with tracking. Treasure Coast Meteorite Co. handles each piece with care appropriate to its scientific and collector value.

Collector significance

CO chondrites represent approximately 1 percent of observed meteorite falls, making them considerably less common than ordinary chondrites in collections. The combination of small chondrule size, abundant CAIs, and preserved organics makes them particularly valued by institutions and private collectors focused on early solar system materials. This 13.67-gram slice provides sufficient size for both display and comparative study without the investment required for larger specimens.

The piece displays well from either side, allowing collectors to showcase the chondrule population regardless of orientation. The slice format offers more accessible pricing than complete individuals while preserving the full scientific characteristics that define the group. Why "Simply Christian" is a "must read"
It presents a compelling case for Christianity without attempting to bully the reader (as C. S. Lewis often does in his essays) and without relying on all those "code words" that long-time Christians find familiar but others do not. This is the Gospel in plan English. Bravo! It firmly insists that Christianity makes claims about history - that Jesus lived, died, and rose again, and that this resurrection is the central event in the story of God's re-creation of our fallen world. It insists that Christians be active participants in the future unfolding of God's plan. We are each called to play a unique role in it. It insists that there is a transcendent realm, another world, that can and does intersect or overlap with our own world, especially in sacraments, in worship, in Bible reading, and in prayer. Moreover, just as the temple was, for Jews in Jesus time, a place where heaven and earth overlapped, now we, as individual Christians, are called to be such places of overlap, where the light of Jesus shines through us. It highlights the crucial importance of forgiveness. Just as God has forgiven us our sins, so are we to forgive others. The Lord's prayer is explicit on this point. Becoming a Christian, Wright asserts, is not a matter or accepting certain improbable factual assertions, but rather a matter of trusting in God and accepting our role in unfolding his plan for the world. Rather than being dissected, as in a laboratory, or treated merely as an instrument of historical or linguistic research, the Bible is in fact one of the principal ways in which God addresses us, to prepare us for our role in fulfilling his ultimate plans. It is another place where this world and God's world overlap. Current debates over "literal" versus "metaphorical" ways of reading scripture are, in Wright's view, counterproductive. The Bible eludes these simplistic categories, which should be abandoned. At its core, then, the "faith" to which the Bible calls us is essentially trusting in a God who has revealed himself in history, who has begun, through Jesus' death and resurrection, to redeem the world and transform it into his kingdom, who invites us into to an intimate relationship with him, who demands that we become all that we were created and meant to be, who forgives us when we fall short of that mark, and who invites us to play a significant role in moving forward his plan for the world. For Wright, Christian faith is not just a matter of spiritual feelings that are quite independent of what we say and do. It makes demands upon us that can only be met in the realm of thought and behavior. As C. S. Lewis did in his fiction, "Simply Christian" persuasively invites its readers to recognize that there is a transcendent reality that impinges on our ordinary world, that the God who rules this realm has made himself known in history and continues to do so, that we are part of his plan to renew his creation, and, consequently, that what we think and do has cosmic significance.

Interesting, but no Lewis
Format: Paperback
Some books can be completely conveyed in about eight sentences or a couple paragraphs. This is one of them. Everything else beyond the core thesis is unnecessary or repetitive. This book probably would have made a good article. Wright is a well known Pauline expert, but in this book he takes a step out of his comfort zone. I usually find Paul rambling and confusing enough, so I look to experts like Wright to clarify Paul for me. But in this book, Wright seems to put on his Paul hat and just reiterates Pauline gobbledy-gook. Throughout, he presents long passages comprised solely of Pauline quotes. This book is billed as an updated version of C.S. Lewis’s “Mere Christianity.” Both Wright and Lewis are seeped in their Anglican tradition. But where Lewis looks at the various Christian denominations and identifies what’s common and good among them all, Wright sees differences and insists they are all wrong. In alienating evangelicals on the one hand, and Catholics on the other, Wright suggests that to be Simply Christian you must abandon your faith traditions that are at odds with his. I can’t imagine Lewis taking this tack. I give this three stars, for its clear style, for being thought provoking, and for its call to personal introspection.

Great Daily Vitamin
Size: 100 Count (Pack of 1)
I needed a daily vitamin but didn't know where to start, so this was my 1st choice. I don't know specifically what I was lacking in my daily diet, but within a week of taking these, I felt much more energetic than before. Been using them for approximately 2 months now and I will be purchasing them in the future. Pricing is within reason.
