Sizes available: HPP quart

Basics: zones 4-8, 5-12' x 6-10', full to part shade (will berry less with less light), large clusters of tiny white flowers late spring into early summer, fruit ripens to dark purple in late summer, prefers consistent moisture.

Synonyms: Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis

Common names: Black Elderberry, Canada Elderberry, American Black Elderberry, Common Elderberry, Tapiro, Sauco, Mexican Elderberry

Family: Adoxaceae (Caprifoliaceae)

Origin/Distribution: North America east of the Rocky Mountains and south into Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil. Native to Maine.

Habitat: thicket, scrubland, lakeshore, woodland edge, wetland margin, disturbed areas, moist and lightly shaded forest, marsh, steam edge

More: This thicket-forming, tap-rooted shrub has high ecosystem value. Here are just some of its gifts: Provides nesting areas and cover for songbirds. Mammals, and birds such as Ruffed Grouse, Northern Cardinal, Gray Catbird, Northern Mockingbird, and Wood Thrush feed on the berries. Eastern Box and Eastern Mud Turtles also enjoy the fruit. Deer may browse this plant. Tiny pollinators are attracted by the tiny fragrant flowers. Elderberry is a larval host for numerous small moths. The Elderberry Borer Beetle, Desmocerus palliatus, feeds on the roots. This beautiful long-horned beetle is native to Maine.

The fruit, leaves, and inner bark have been used to make dye. The cooked berries can be made into jam, jelly, and syrup as well as used in pies and pancakes. The flowers have been eaten as fritters or in pancakes and have been used to make wine. However, the seeds are toxic. The bark, roots, leaves and un-cooked berries are also toxic, so proceed with caution. Has been used medicinally in numerous cultures. The hollow stems have many uses, including for whistles (after removing the pith). You can cut this plant back hard to rejuvenate it, but as it blooms on second year wood, you will sacrifice a year of bloom. This plant is very closely related to the European Black Elderberry.

Even More: This is a good place to discuss respect. Prior to harvesting from an elderberry, it is customary to ask permission from the Elder Mother. Here is an example of asking before cutting: "Old girl, give me some of thy wood, and I will give thee some of mine when I grow into a tree." Leaving a small gift is customary. Cutting an elder without permission invites misfortune and burning elder brings death to your home. This respect for taking from nature has been practiced for millennia in numerous cultures. I highly recommend adopting some sort of acknowledgment and thanking rituals into your life including when you collect plants, rocks, feathers, bones etc. from your surroundings, or when you hunt or fish. You will feel all the better for it - connected and filled with gratitude. There is simply no downside.

GREAT TOYS FOR BIRDING DOGS.
Color: Blue&Purple&Orange
I would purchase these again!! These have lasted for the past four years with four dogs. My dogs love carrying these around and tossing them into the air. I have Vizslas, they are not heavy chewers, but love carrying toys in their mouths.

Worthless Dog Toy
Color: Blue
Buyer beware! This item is worthless - if I could rate it -5*, I would. It was delivered this morning and was destroyed literally within 10 minutes. The squeaker was punctured and two of the crinkle legs were stripped by my Shichon.

Fun for a few minutes but beware!
Color: Blue&Purple&Orange, Color: Blue&Purple&Orange
I have 3 dogs so looking for multipacks of the same style toy is great so there is less squabbling between who gets what toy. I have a border collie puppy, a 4 yr old Irish wolfhound cross and a 17 yr old border collie. These toys were loved by each one of my dogs. The toys are floppy and easy to squeak in the octopus head. So much so that my elderly boy could happily play and make it squeak. He even collected the toys up and took them to his bed! My puppy ran off bounding through the house squeaking the octopus' head with the tentacle-legs flying everywhere as she ran around, so the entertainment value is pretty high! My Irish wolfhound loved the crinkling on the tentacles of the octopus and went straight for tearing into the orange toy pulling out the plastic, then pulling out the squeaker. The toy did ok with a game of tuggy (tug-o-war) with him and this toy would have been a great reward during a training session. The fabric is not very tough so this is not a toy for aggressive chewers. Legs were easily chewed off and unfortunately were ingested by one of my dogs which caused them to vomit repeatedly throughout the night. Same with the squeaker, they are thin, soft plastic. So if your dog is a voracious chewer, give these a miss. What I liked about these toys: 1. They were reasonably priced for 3 toys 2. These are not small toys! They are great for medium and large dogs. 3. Very fun for the dogs to play with. 4. No stuffing to clean up What I didn't like: 1. Toys are not durable for tough tuggers. 2. The toys are not reinforced for chewing. 3. Squeaker not strong enough. The toys just didn't last. There was maybe 15 minutes of play time at most before the chewing and destruction of the toys really got started. I might buy these again if I can give my puppy better supervision for her chewing these and trying to stop her from ingesting the pieces she is chewing off put I probably won't buy them again. There's too much plastic that can be eaten with the crinkly plastic in the legs.

Easily torn apart but still fun
Color: Orange+Green
This is not the toy for your dog is they like to rip them apart. That being, my sister’s dog loved these as his gift. He did tear them apart pretty easily but he enjoyed every moment of it and they were his comfort toy for at least 3 months. The colors are great, the size is perfect for tug-o-war and tossing around. The squeaking noise is loud and grab the dog’s attention easily. My sister’s dog is a corgi mix so he went ham on playing with these.
