Voluntaryism was first devised by English writer, philosopher, and political theorist Auberon Edward William Molyneux Herbert (1838-1906). He was a member of Parliament for two terms in the UK, first as a Liberal MP and then as a member of the Liberty Party.
Voluntaryism, as put forward by Auberon Herbert, is the political philosophy that holds that all human relationships should be voluntary. This includes both economic and social relationships. The basic premise of voluntaryism is that humans are best able to live peaceful and productive lives when they are free to associate with others voluntarily, without coercion.
Since Herbert, many others have identified as voluntaryists, generally advocating for social cooperation through universalized nonviolence. Though as the first, Herbert's writing still holds heavy influence.
