Mastering the essential story emotions: How to seduce the reader OnDemand WebinarABOUT THE WEBINAR Imagine sitting in a theatre after seeing a terrible film. As the end credits roll, the director and writer rush on stage to defend their work over the crowd's booing "But we read all the books, taken all the seminars We followed all the rules and principles of the hero's journey We structured it well, had all the plot points at the right timing We even had the hero save a cat, for crying out loud! ABOUT THE WEBINAR

Imagine sitting in a theatre after seeing a terrible film. As the end credits roll, the director and writer rush on stage to defend their work over the crowd's booing--"But we read all the books, taken all the seminars... We followed all the rules and principles of the hero's journey... We structured it well, had all the plot points at the right timing... We even had the hero save a cat, for crying out loud! What's wrong with you?!" Silly, right?

But this is the mentality of most aspiring writers who ignore the one unshakable truth of storytelling: "It's not about what happens to people on a page; it's about what happens to a reader in his heart and mind." In other words, it's all about engaging the reader emotionally. That's what craft is all about.

A story is a dance of reader emotions. The more felt, the more satisfying the story. And it's your job as a writer to know not only what these emotions are but how to create them on the page on a consistent basis. Otherwise, the reader is bored and frustrated instead of entertained, and that's it. Game over.

Join award-winning UCLA instructor Karl Iglesias as he explores the psychology of the reader, and demystifies once and for all what it means to tell a story well. Going beyond the basics, he'll show you how to seduce your readers, force them to turn the pages to see what happens next, interest them so intensely that they are "taken out of themselves" into the world you've created. The ideal is to make them forget they're actually reading words on a page. You'll be challenged to view your script not as a 110-page blueprint for a film or TV show, but as the promise of an intense and satisfying emotional experience.

After all, "screen" writing is easy: You just write 110 pages in proper script format with slug lines, description, and dialogue. But writing to keep readers interested and moving them emotionally is another challenge. It's not about plot points; it's not about character; it's about EMOTION!

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

  • How story emotions are universal, not genre-specific
  • How to avoid being boring on the page
  • How to get attention on the page and keep the reader's eyes glued to the page
  • How to build an emotion-based outline
  • The five needs of the reader that must be satisfied in a story
  • The three types of reader emotions
  • The crucial difference between character emotions and reader emotions
  • Why stories are emotion machines

Weird smell
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Queen(Pack of 2)
The pillows are great for someone looking for something cool and comfortable. We loved them so much that we bought a second pair. However, we were seriously disappointed with the odor of our last purchase. They give off a strong and indescribable chemical/burning plastic smell so nauseating that it’s difficult to sleep with. We’re hoping this issue will resolve with a couple more washes of the pillow cases, but am worried the source is the stuffing itself.

helped treat my sore neck
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Camping Pillow(Pack of 1)
This pillow — after dialing in the right amount of shredded foam — has greatly helped my sore neck. Initially, I had to remove some foam. Then I gradually added foam until it reached optimum comfort and support. It is also CPAP-friendly — especially when I position my head near the pillow's edge. (I am a left-side sleeper.) I like the travel size because I use a bulky hugging pillow to ease stress on my shoulder and elbow. That makes my side of the bed feel cramped if using a larger head pillow. A smaller pillow is easy to flip end-to-end in the middle of the night. I have spent lots of money on pillows over the years, but this is the best I've ever had for relieving [1] neck pain and [2] CPAP mask seal problems. Very comfortable, supportive, and affordable. I did not notice any unpleasant smell — and I am usually sensitive to that kind of thing. Would highly recommend.

Love them!
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Queen(Pack of 2)
Love them! After 10 years with our MyPillows, they finally lost their fluff. The reviews I read of the MyPillows of today were not good; they didn’t have as much filling as they used to. These pillows remind me of how fluffy our new MyPillows were 10 years ago!! You sink right into them and can mush them however and they stay. These are way cheaper than the Coop and it’s the same concept; add or remove the filling as needed. The cooling side is a huge plus too! You won’t be disappointed with these pillows!

Cool, Comfortable, and Worth Every Penny!
Color: Light Gray, Size: Standard
I’m honestly impressed with these pillowcases! From the first night, I could feel the difference—they stay noticeably cool, which is perfect if you tend to sleep hot like I do. The fabric feels silky smooth against the skin without being slippery, and it’s really gentle on both my hair and face. I’ve also noticed I wake up less sweaty and more comfortable overall. They fit my pillows well and don’t slip off during the night, which is a big plus. After washing, they held up great—no fading, shrinking, or loss of softness. If you’re looking for pillowcases that actually help keep you cool and comfortable through the night, these are definitely worth it. I’ll be buying more!

Extremely cold, silky, gentle on hair
Color: White, Size: Queen
This was so cold when I removed it from the package that at first I thought it would be too cold. It was as if it had been in a freezer. I really like how silky it is on my face. (I can't stand a rough feeling pillowcase.) It is also gentle on my curly hair. The pillowcase can warm up from being slept on, but a shift of just a few inches gets back to wonderful cold. I highly recommend this as an extremely cool, silky smooth fabric. These are much colder than my very expensive miracle sheets.
