The hand-dyed olive green saddle leather has developed a warm, inviting patina over time, giving the sofa a beautifully worn-in character that only decades of use can impart. The three loose seat cushions offer both plush comfort and structural balance, while brass nailhead trim adds a refined accent along the front and arm panels. The sofa rests on solid walnut bun feet, enhancing its stately presence and traditional English charm.
Originally said to have been commissioned in the 18th century by Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, the sofa was designed to allow a gentleman to sit upright without wrinkling his attire. By the 19th century, the Chesterfield had become a staple of English libraries and gentlemen’s clubs, symbols of refinement, intellect, and quiet luxury.
This particular example is in excellent original condition, with a fully intact frame and beautifully preserved leather. We have cleaned, waxed, and polished the entire piece, enhancing its natural depth and sheen while preserving the integrity of the original finish. It is as comfortable as it is decorative, an exceptional vintage piece that blends luxury, history, and style.
