WARD, Harriet. Five Years in Kaffirland; with Sketches of the Late War in that Country, to the Conclusion of Peace. Written on the Spot. London: Henry Colburn. 1848.

Two volumes, 8vo. Modern tan half-calf over marbled boards, spines with raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt, red morocco lettering-pieces; pp. xi, 306, 24 (advertisements); vii, 352, 1 (advertisements), two frontispieces in lithography, one lithographic map; light offsetting from frontispieces; otherwise only lightly and evenly toned; a very good set; provenance: stamp of the Sons of England Patriotic & Benevolent Society. Historical Research Committee in upper margin of p. iii in volume one.

First edition of an uncommon title. "An account of the War of the Axe written by the wife of an officer with the 91st Regiment" (Mendelssohn). The Wards, Harriet and John, travelled out on the Abercrombie Robinson, surviving her wreck in Algoa Bay. In his History of South Africa Since September 1795, Theal remarks of this book that "The leading events of that war are faithfully described, and a correct view is given of the occurrences that led to it. Much sympathy is displayed for the suffering colonists, though as to the ill-feeling between the Burghers and the soldiers the part of the latter is decidedly taken" (p. 410). Harriet Ward, born on Barbados in 1808, was one of the foremost published women writers on South Africa, with short stories and one novel. She recently attracted the attention of academic writers dealing with race, gender and colonialism, and indeed, her writing is lively, informative and opinionated, a prime source for the history of South Africa, and especially the Eastern Cape Province.

Great mug warmer with temp control
Color: Black
I replaced a cheap mug warmer with a couple of these for the house, and for almost the same price this is a lot more functional. I really like the temperature control and silicone surface protector. In combination with the carafe below, this has changed my life - no more microwaving coffee all morning. https://www.amazon.com/GiNT-Stainless-Thermal-Thermos-Retention/dp/B07MW5N7MS

Super Satisfied Customer Here!
Color: Gold, Color: Gold
I purchased the gold/black mug warmer. I always spend a good about of money for great coffee products and I take my time to perfect my coffee for my mornings at work. However, I get pulled into urgent meetings and just something urgent and I always leave more than half of my coffee behind. When I come back it’s cold and that’s very disappointing considering the money and time I spent to make it bc I then have to toss it. I don’t believe in microwaves and I refuse to use one. When I found this, I was super excited! It looks perfect at my desk and it works perfect! I would have liked it to be more on the brass gold like my pen holder, but it’s just as pretty! As you can see, my mug had a layer on the bottom and that made me think it may not work well, but it did the job. My coffee was super warm and it got even hotter as I left it there tearing it. I turned it one before making my coffee, so I’m not sure exactly how long it took to warm up but for me, by the time I got back, it was the peg temperature. I highly recommend this to anyone who has the same struggles. No more cold coffees! Thank you!!!

It is heavy
Size: 58.3mm, Color: Black
Item was as described and shipped promptly. It is heavy and works well with my portafilter. I haven't had it long enough to really evaluate how helpful it is.

Great little temper
Size: 53mm, Color: Silver
Works great! Only problem is that it doesn’t have that feel of tamping. Wish I had more feedback. It just goes down very easily and doesn’t have that feeling of solid tamping. Now that doesn’t mean it’s not doing its job. Works fine but would like some manual feedback.
