Common names: Royal Fern, Flowering Fern (see the image of the inflorescence)

Family: Osmundaceae

Origin/Distribution: Newfoundland to Ontario, south to Florida and Texas. As well as being native to North and South America, this fern is native to Western Eurasia. Also native to Maine.

Habitat: the consistently damp and wet places: marsh, bog, stream bank, swamp, water-holding low places in field, meadow, savanna, and prairie

More: A magnificent specimen for a water garden. Slow to get started and a slow spreader, so be patient. The fibers in the root crown are harvested as a growing medium for potted orchids. Has been used medicinally. The fronds work well in large flower arrangements.

Why grow ferns besides your admiration for a plant that has been present on Earth for over 360 billion years? Ferns support wildlife by creating protective cover and shady, moist micro-habitats, in particular for small mammals and invertebrates. The fuzzy covering on emerging croziers is used by birds for nesting material. Ferns help prevent erosion and filter run-off. For the gardener they offer the gifts of graceful architecture and low-maintenance textural beauty.

Love the blue numbers
Not quite sure how to rate this. It's an attractive basic analog watch; I especially like the blue numbers. And my experience with the reliability and durability of Casio has always been terrific. But... it's huge. I am stunned to see the other review that states that this watch is too small and is suitable only for a child; I think the reviewer must have been reviewing some other model. This one is larger than any other watch I own, including a hand-me-down men's watch that I got from a friend. This is NOT a unisex watch and should not be advertised as such. But if Casio would make the same thing in a women's model, I would snap it up. UPDATE: When my smaller watch died, I finally started wearing this one. I've gotten used to the size, and now it looks and feels normal to me instead of huge. I adore the blue numbers--they make me happy every time I look at the watch.

Works in the pool!
This is my second watch like this. I wear it almost every day, including in aqua class. I like the size - big enough to read easily, but not too big. I originally bout this watch because I wanted an inexpensive watch to wear to the gym. I find myself reaching for it even when I am not going to the gym!
