Description:
Atypical meets Eleanor and Park in this relatable and heartfelt coming of age story about a neurodivergent teen navigating school, friendships and first love.?Evvie Chambers is doing her best to skate through the last month of high school to graduation. The only thing standing in her way is a biology report on foxes-and her teacher, Mrs. Audrey Dearborn. The same Mrs. Dearborn who's been a thorn in Evvie's side for years, refusing to acknowledge or accommodate her neurodiversity. Evvie would much rather be doing her report on Aretha, the octopus she cares for when she volunteers at the Minnesota Zoo but deviating from the exact assignment isn't allowed-and Mrs. Dearborn isn't going to make following the rules easy. Evvie's only escape from high school hell is the Lair: a safe haven for kids whose brains need some time away. But when Mrs. Dearborn refuses Evvie's pleas to finesse the final report assignment to her strengths, and persistent bully Vandal McDaniel directs his harassment toward Lair members, Evvie finds herself more desperate than ever for stability and support. When a shocking act of violence pushes the whole mess over the edge, Evvie, with the help of her friends and the others who love her, will have to figure out how to find her place in the wide world, while remaining true to herself.

the BEST BOOK EVER to learn what autism feels like
Format: Hardcover
I have read just about every book ever written (in English) related to autism -- well over 700 of them. This is the best book that communicates what autism feels like, and our life experiences. I'm decades older than the audience the book is intended for; but EVERYONE should read this book to understand we who are different. It also points out several well-known facts: autism has some heredity trails, having just one trusted adult who treats the different child like they are valuable is key to that child being able to cope with the world around them.
What surprised me was when an educator with over 25 years of experience in special ed, just did not think the book was that good. That convinced me of the book's unique value: it truly puts the reader in the body and mind of the different child. Some educators cannot do that.
The story focuses upon a female -- so not sure how applicable it is to a male different child. I hope some others would test that out.
The BEST BOOK EVER to understand what autism feels like. I know as I have been on the autism spectrum since before there was an autism spectrum.

Fantastic read
Format: Hardcover
Read as part of upper elementary book club with 4th and 5th graders. Told entirely in prose from the point of view of a 7th grade girl struggling with changing social dynamics and self-identity, we see Selah learn to advocate for herself amidst family and school challenges. This book made me laugh and cry, but more than anything, it made me cheer Selah on as she discovers what autism means for her.

Fun educational book
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
This book is a big hit! My 5 year old son and I read it so many times since we ordered this in April. It has cute illustration and 60 flaps and pop-ups which make the book even more exciting. And because of this, I don’t recommend this book to young kids under 3 though. Some flaps might be tricky for younger kids. Even I as a parent learned so much about construction.
