The 'Open-Air-Box' system gives you the abundance and unrestricted 360° of air source compared to OEM's sealed airbox with a flat filter and tube-fed air source. During R&D, we installed temperature probes around the engine compartment and the gauge showed the inside temperature matched the ambient after vehicle speed past 20 mph. And by logging the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor also showed that open-air-box intake generated a higher volume (gr/sec) of air going through the sensor. So when we had to choose between (a) cooler air at all speed with a limited air source, vs. (b) cooler air at 20~ mph. with an unlimited air source, the choice was pretty obvious.
Also included pre-oiled and cleanable filter. Please click here for more info on the cleaning kit.
MINI did a great job on the 2011 model MCS in improving the turbo intake tube by replacing the soft rubber tubing with a full-size and rigid ABS plastic one, similar to NM's aluminum/silicone version that we offer for the 2007~2010 MCS & JCW vehicles. So we decided to leave the inlet tube out and price out the kit to be more economical.
Notes:
Due to the ECU change, we came up with a different bracket that holds the fresh air inlet pipe. Please see below for the production breakdown.
2007 - 2012 (March Production): Use part number NM.658857
2012 (April Production) - up: Use part number NM.658857.1
If you purchase this kit prior to December 2012 for your post-April '12 production Mini, please email or call us (805.388.7171) and we will send you the updated bracket for FREE!
For those who do not want to deal with periodical filter cleaning, a dry paper filter is an option. Made using the same paper material as the factory panel filters, designed to be thrown away once dirty. Same performance and price as the oiled filter. Make sure to choose the part number that ends with (D) for the dry filter kit.
