Johnny is a Warlpiri, Gurindji, and Anmatjerre man from the Northern Territory of Australia, a region rich in Indigenous cultural heritage. He began his painting journey in 1996, a pivotal year when he received formal permission and blessing from his senior Warlpiri and Gurindji Elders and Lawmen, reflecting respect for cultural protocols and sacred traditions.

His artistic style and technique are deeply rooted in his strong familial ties and extensive ancestral connections within the Central Tanami desert area of the Northern Territory. These connections influence his storytelling through art, as he vividly portrays the histories, Dreamings, and spiritual journeys of his ancestors—his fathers, mothers, grandmothers, and grandfathers. Johnny’s work is not only a reflection of personal family stories but also a preservation of cultural knowledge and spiritual beliefs passed down through generations, making his paintings a vital part of his community’s cultural expression.

Meaning of the Artwork

This is Johnny’s vivid depiction of the Possum Dreaming, a significant cultural story in Warlpiri tradition. The narrative recounts the adventures of a possum ancestor who journeyed across the vast Warlpiri lands during the Jukurrpa, the Dreamtime, which is the foundation of their spiritual beliefs and creation stories. The painting features ‘E’ shapes representing the footprints of the possum, while lines illustrate the imprints of the possum’s tail in the sand, conveying movement and presence. At the center of the artwork, the concentric circle symbolizes the possum’s burrow, a vital resting place and a symbol of safety and community. Possum Dreaming stories are rich with themes of hunting practices, kinship relationships that define social structure, and the moral lessons related to the importance of respecting tribal laws. These stories serve not only as cultural teachings but also as a way to maintain connection with the land, ancestors, and spiritual beliefs.

Fine Simple Product, Works as Advertised
Size: 3-Panel
Performs as advertised, a simple upright divider. I use it to mark my "office" space when working from home. Assembly was straightforward and well documented. One person can do it, but a second person can be helpful when sliding the fabric divider pieces onto their poles. Part quality is fine for the price point. The only mild annoyance is that the upright poles can start getting loose from the metal feet, and need to be retightened occasionally (Allen wrench is included, keep it handy for retightening). It's fairly lightweight and easy to reposition, but the feet are heavy enough to keep it steady once placed. All in all, a good product. I was pleased enough to buy a second one when my son wanted something to block sunlight from behind his computer desk.

Wobbly and Poor Design
Size: 1-Panel
Update: nope! Not worth the money. My cat simply brushed against the divider, and it fell, knocking breakable things over. Not safe! It serves it's purpose, but...the screws were basically glued to the packaging. It took me longer to get the screws out of the packaging than it did to put it together. The assembly was easy. I am not mechanically inclined by any means, but the instructions, despite being very hard to read (I have over 40 eyes), were pretty simple. Structurally, it is very wobbly. I think they should have designed it with a middle rod to keep it more stable. I find that the attachments to the rods are wobbly and should have been screwed rather than popped into an attachment hole without reinforcement. That would have also made the room divider more stable. I have cats, but the material is easy to clean. I took a damp cloth to it, and it came right off. As far as see-through...I think it does a great job of masking theO other side of the room.. I just wish it was a little longer and closer to the floor stand. I like that it came with extra parts. It's just a very cheaply made item, and I don't think the price for the item reflects how cheaply it is made, how wobbly and unstable it is, or the poor design.

Taking forever but worth it
Size: 1-Panel, Size: 1-Panel
Love the product. However, trying to take the screws etc out of its box, it’s almost impossible due to the adhesive inside it. I have neck and arm issues so for me it was even more difficult. Adhesive stuck to each washer and screw so I had adhesive all over my hands then I had to get it off of the items.
