| Artist Bio: | Zoë McDonald was born in 2003 in Kempton Park Gauteng. After moving to various locations throughout South Africa, her family settled in the scenic town of Piketberg Western Cape in 2012, where McDonald still resides. From a very young age McDonald was encouraged and supported by her parents, and in particularly by her artistic mother, to explore her interest and love for art. Throughout her schooling McDonald received recognition and accolades for her artistic abilities and skill. McDonald matriculated in 2021 from Piketberg Highschool. Since matriculating McDonald has worked in various positions, while still developing her skills and prowess as an artist, regularly receiving commissions from a small but growing group of collectors. In 2024 McDonald made the decision to start working full-time as a professional artist. |

I am rather personable and have a quirky, idiosyncratic sense of humour. American Gothic is such an iconic artwork and a piece of Americana; the utter dourness of the two protagonists has always charmed and amused viewers. One cannot help but giggle and smirk at their stern, puritanical, and disapproving visages. I can’t help but imagine them in a South African context. As a South African, I love a good braai broodjie with the best ingredient: the iconic Mrs. Ball’s Chutney! It’s so sweet and enhances the flavours of the braai broodjie. I am also certain that a braai broodjie could unite the nation, as we can all appreciate and share it with one another. With every Springboks game, we come together as a nation for a braai to celebrate yet another win. I was eager to paint American Gothic because I knew it would challenge me to tackle elements that would test my technical skills, such as architecture, portraits, patterns, reflections, and clouds. I have never painted such a large piece, which pushed my nerves and took me outside my comfort zone. American Gothic has always been iconic and intriguing to me because of the facial expressions. I hope she can finally smile, looking forward to a braai broodjie! |
