Red and black have long been traditional colours of Papua New Guinea tribes and are also reminiscent of the country’s time under the German Empire prior to 1918. Prior to 1970, Papua new Guinea was known as the Australian Trust Territory of Papua and New Guinea and it’s flag featured the bird of Paradise on a green background for sporting events, another flag was suggested by the Australian Administration but the current flag was settled on after a competition on 1971.
