Bronze Age impact specimen with shock deformation features

This 33.38g slice from the Kaalijärv impact site reveals Neumann bands cutting through kamacite lamellae within the classic Widmanstätten pattern. The bands appear as fine parallel lines crossing the broader octahedral structure, evidence of shock compression during the meteorite's violent arrival approximately 3,500 years ago. The etched surface exposes both features simultaneously: the geometric intergrowth of iron-nickel alloys formed during slow cooling in a parent body core, overlaid by deformation structures from terrestrial impact.

Kaalijärv material originates from a well-documented crater field on Saaremaa Island, Estonia. The impact occurred during the Bronze Age, within the timeline of human settlement in the region. This specimen preserves both its extraterrestrial metallurgy and the record of its collision with Earth.

Octahedral structure and shock features

The Widmanstätten pattern results from kamacite and taenite crystallizing along octahedral planes as the parent body core cooled over millions of years. Etching with acid preferentially attacks kamacite, revealing the three-dimensional geometry as intersecting bands across the polished surface.

Neumann bands are shock-induced deformation twins within kamacite crystals. They form when intense pressure causes the crystal lattice to deform along specific planes without melting. In this specimen, the bands cross the existing octahedral structure at angles, creating a secondary linear pattern distinct from the broader Widmanstätten lamellae. Their presence confirms shock pressures consistent with high-velocity impact.

IAB complex meteorites and differentiated parent bodies

IAB-MG (medium-coarsest octahedrite) iron meteorites belong to the IAB complex, a diverse group showing evidence of both igneous differentiation and impact disruption. Their parent body likely experienced partial melting and metal-silicate separation before catastrophic fragmentation mixed metallic and silicate components. The resulting mixture underwent slow cooling within reassembled debris, producing the octahedral structure visible in this specimen.

Iron meteorites represent the cores of ancient planetesimals that differentiated early in solar system history. These bodies formed within the first few million years after solar system formation, preserving metal alloy compositions and cooling rates that provide constraints on planetary accretion processes. Learn About Meteorites offers additional context on classification and formation environments.

Frequently asked questions

Is this meteorite authenticated? Kaalijärv is classified as Iron IAB-MG in the Meteoritical Bulletin. Material from this locality has been studied extensively due to its association with the Saaremaa crater field. Verification: MetBull search. This specimen includes a certificate of authenticity.

What are Neumann bands? Neumann bands are planar deformation features within kamacite crystals, formed when shock compression causes the iron lattice to twin along specific crystallographic planes. They appear as fine parallel lines that cross the Widmanstätten pattern at characteristic angles. Their presence indicates shock pressures between 13 and 40 GPa, typical of high-velocity impacts.

What is included with this specimen? The listing includes the 33.38g etched slice and certificate of authenticity documenting classification and provenance.

What makes the Kaalijärv impact site scientifically significant? The crater field on Saaremaa preserves a well-dated Bronze Age impact event with material distributed across multiple craters. The chronology places the impact within human history, making it one of the few meteorite falls that occurred during documented settlement periods. The site provides data on small-body atmospheric entry and ground-level cratering processes.

Display quality and structural clarity

Kaalijärv specimens with visible Neumann bands offer collectors both extraterrestrial metallurgical structure and terrestrial shock features in a single piece. The combination of octahedral geometry and linear shock deformation creates layered complexity across the etched surface. Material from this locality carries additional historical context through its association with a documented Bronze Age impact site.

This 33.38g slice provides clear visibility of both structural systems without requiring magnification. The surface preparation exposes intersecting features at angles that emphasize their geometric relationships. For collectors seeking shock-bearing iron meteorites with known impact histories, Kaalijärv material represents accessible entry into this subset. The design is adorable and I love the little bones and paw prints they put on the tabs. They are easy to slide and the colors are bright and admirable. There is different difficulty levels. The yellow circles are more on the easy side. The red ones are a bit more harder if you have a more intelligent dog. The three white tabs in the middle move in a 360 circle, there is one missing so you can slide the red tab in to hide the treats. I use my dog's kibble as treats; the kibble pellets are 1cm in length and 1cm in width. I can fit about 2 pellets in each tab hole, there are 14 small holes which you can hide the treats in total. Cleaning the puzzle It depends if you wash it by hand or put it in the dishwasher. I do both but I prefer the dishwasher because it is a little hard to clean by hand since there is so many nooks and crannies on the toy. Of course, it is dishwasher safe and I recommend putting it in by itself because you don't want to cross-contaminate the dog slobber to be on your dishes. I wouldn't put crushed or wet dog food in it because it could get in the sliding rails and jam it up or get moldy. If you are going to dry the toy, open all the tabs so they are exposed. If you cannot, that's okay. My dog's opinion I have two dogs, a 2-year-old chocolate Labrador named Maggie and a 7-year-old labradoodle named Rufio, Maggie takes about 1 or 2 minutes to finish the puzzle because she is super energetic. Rufio takes 3 or 4 minutes because he is calmer; but sometimes I have to help him just a little bit. It is suitable for all dog ages and I recommend it if your dog (s) are annoying you. They both love it and I give it to them for mental stimulation and as a reward. The bottom has "non-slip pads", but if I'm being honest they actually don't work that well. My dogs just slide it around.

Great design!
Color: Higher Level-Navy A
This Joansan Dog Puzzle Toy is exactly what I was looking for. My little MinPin is a worker and he likes having a job to do. I purchased this to entertain him when rolling his treat ball all over the place isn't practical. This disc has a non slip bottom and it's actually fairly heavy. It doesn't slide easily. So my little worker usually ends up picking it up and transporting it to different locations throughout the house. Obviously, individual results will vary, depending on size, personality, and breed of the dog using it, but it's been great for my lil guy. He gets a little physical and mental exercise. It's sturdy enough to withstand his scratching and chewing. My big dog likes it too. The size is perfect for food oriented cats too. My cat is too lazy to work for his food though. So he wasn't interested in it.

This feeder will surely make your dogs work for their food.
Color: Higher Level-Navy A
I recently tried this slow feeder (I purchased 2 feeders) for my two Corgis (25 & 30 lbs.). Overall, it’s a well-constructed product and definitely slows down eating as intended. The design encourages dogs to work for their food, which helps with digestion and keeps them engaged. That said, there are a couple of challenges I noticed. The kibble sometimes gets jammed in the sliding doors, which can make it harder for my pups to access the food. Also, the feeder doesn’t hold a large amount of kibble—I found myself needing to refill it 2–3 times per meal to accommodate both of my dogs. Finally, my pups had a tougher time reaching the kibble in the middle ring, which caused a bit of frustration. Despite these issues, it’s sturdy, safe, and does the job of slowing down fast eaters. I think it could work especially well for smaller dogs or those who eat less at mealtime.

He loves it, what else is there to say!
Color: Green
My dog loves this ball. Originally we used it as it is designed and put treats inside it to knock out and keep him busy, now he just loves to throw it around and fling it by the pieces of fabric that come out. He is generally a toy destroyer so the fact that it is still arounds shows that it is strong and was for sure worth the buy. Would 100% recommend for any dog that likes to keep busy!

Pupper shakes with excitement when I take this out
Color: Green
This is a very good toy for a super busy pup but take it away after they find the treats or it's getting destroyed (the fleece) totally worth the money and the five minute prep time for a play session
