With 186 architectural decorations carved in relief by convicts, the Ross Bridge is an expression of defiance against the monarchy and the establishment – a rare, historic document written in stone. Some stones are poignant, but many are subversive, satirical, cynical and lewd. They depict crime and punishment, home and separation, ever-present death and hope of re-birth.

The bridge sculptures are one of the great enigmas of Tasmanian art. Nobody knows whence came the strange shapes in the carvings: anthropomorphic and hybrid animals, human-like creatures from a fairy world, floral forms, images of water, the crushed earth, the U-forms that look like wombs, the lozenges that look like vulvas, and the phalli on ubiquitous hares, as well as weird masks, ropes and tools.

As a descendant of convict quarryman, Thomas Herbert, of the Ross Bridge party, Jennie Jackson was drawn to research the details of the carvings. Thanks to developments in photographic technology and easier access to archives, Jackson has been able to reconsider earlier interpretations and explore the intrigue of these stones.

THE AUTHOR: Jennie Jackson’s work as a general practitioner in the midlands of Tasmania took her across the Ross Bridge between Oatlands and Campbell Town every rostered day, while she was majoring in sculpture at the Tasmanian School of Art. As she researched and interpreted the details of the carvings, she realised the value of her practice of Jungian psychology and women’s health. Over eight years, she has prepared biographies of Daniel Herbert, Charles Atkinson, Rum John Conn and Mary Witherington and has developed an archive, a web site, lectured, written essays and published a small book with The People’s Library, The Ross Bridge, A Cast of Characters (2018). Her aim is to educate everyone about the historical significance and rarity of the convicts’ subversive art before the carvings weather away.

Love them!
Size: 3-Panel
It was funny to get together. Fun moments. My grandfather whom forgot to look down, stepped on it, slid, and did the splits.. there was a little smudge haha. But— its been a year and I still love them.

Great home office dividers!
Size: 3-Panel
Needed something to create a home office that would stand on an uneven basement floor. These are the perfect solution! No prying eyes and only took me an hour to put up both sets by myself, pretty easy. They are completely opaque.

Fine Simple Product, Works as Advertised
Size: 3-Panel
Performs as advertised, a simple upright divider. I use it to mark my "office" space when working from home. Assembly was straightforward and well documented. One person can do it, but a second person can be helpful when sliding the fabric divider pieces onto their poles. Part quality is fine for the price point. The only mild annoyance is that the upright poles can start getting loose from the metal feet, and need to be retightened occasionally (Allen wrench is included, keep it handy for retightening). It's fairly lightweight and easy to reposition, but the feet are heavy enough to keep it steady once placed. All in all, a good product. I was pleased enough to buy a second one when my son wanted something to block sunlight from behind his computer desk.

Wobbly and Poor Design
Size: 1-Panel
Update: nope! Not worth the money. My cat simply brushed against the divider, and it fell, knocking breakable things over. Not safe! It serves it's purpose, but...the screws were basically glued to the packaging. It took me longer to get the screws out of the packaging than it did to put it together. The assembly was easy. I am not mechanically inclined by any means, but the instructions, despite being very hard to read (I have over 40 eyes), were pretty simple. Structurally, it is very wobbly. I think they should have designed it with a middle rod to keep it more stable. I find that the attachments to the rods are wobbly and should have been screwed rather than popped into an attachment hole without reinforcement. That would have also made the room divider more stable. I have cats, but the material is easy to clean. I took a damp cloth to it, and it came right off. As far as see-through...I think it does a great job of masking theO other side of the room.. I just wish it was a little longer and closer to the floor stand. I like that it came with extra parts. It's just a very cheaply made item, and I don't think the price for the item reflects how cheaply it is made, how wobbly and unstable it is, or the poor design.
