Explore the intricate tapestry of life transitions in America through Francesco Duina's insightful book. Highlighting pivotal moments such as going to college, welcoming a first child, job loss, and retirement, this essential read delves into the sociocultural narratives surrounding these significant changes. With a comprehensive exploration of how diverse voices—from politicians to bestselling authors—frame life transitions, readers will discover the dominant discourses shaping our understanding of personal growth and societal evolution. The book presents two central themes: one celebrating transitions as thrilling opportunities for reinvention, emphasizing individualism and fresh starts; the other focusing on continuity, interconnectedness, and acceptance within the life cycle. These contrasting yet complementary perspectives provide a profound insight into American culture, making it a valuable resource for students and anyone intrigued by the sociology of culture and the life course.

Description:
We celebrate, talk about, and worry a great deal about transitions
in life. Going to college, having a first child, losing a job, and
retiring constitute just a few of the pivotal moments in the lives
of many. Sociologists and psychologists have devoted considerable
attention to life transitions. Yet we know very little about
whether there exists a common thread to our understandings of life
transitions in general. How do journalists, leading politicians,
sport icons, bestselling authors, government agencies, Hallmark
cards, popular TV shows, and other ?voices? of popular
culture talk about transitions in life? Do these voices provide a
coherent picture of how we make sense of life transitions?
In this book, Francesco Duina shows how the dominant American
discourse articulates two basic approaches to transitions in life.
The first approach depicts transitions as exciting, individualistic
opportunities for new beginnings: the past is cast aside, the
future is wide open, and the self has the opportunity to recreate
itself anew. The second paints transitions as having to do with
continuity, our connections to others, and the life-cycle, with an
emphasis on acceptance and adaptation. Though contrasting, the two
approaches ultimately complement each other. Their analysis reveals
a great deal about American culture and society, and will be of
great interest to students of the life course and the sociology of
culture.

Looks great, doesn't hold much so measure carefully
Color: Gray, Size: Rectangle
I got this organizer for my husband to keep his stuff by the door. While it's a little smaller than I'd hoped, it looks great in the entryway. It's super easy to snap together, but feels like the material could be damaged easily if you're not careful. He is able to store his keys, wallet, and sunglasses in it, and throws hit hat on top. Overall we are really happy with it.

Perfect
Color: Blue, Size: Square
Just what I needed. The size is perfect as I didn’t want anything too large to place my watches and other accessories inside near the corner of my desk. Its size is essentially 7x7, and the design is sleek compared to other organizer holders. I got the color in blue and it looks stunning with the rest of my setup. I’m unsure about other reviewers, but mine came safely and the leather walls are decently thick, so it’s not too flimsy when buttoned together which holds very securely. There are hole spaces at the bottom corners once assembled, so if you have super small items such as beads or really small jewelry, they could potentially fall out, but most of my items are large enough that won’t be of concern. If you have a wire charger near by, the holes could be used to charge your smartphone inside, which has its own practical usage. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it if you’re on a lookout for a sleek but compact organizer holder, and I personally will consider getting another one in the future for myself for other household belongings.

I needed to be more organized, so I purchased this. It holds my remote, pens and other things needed with my tissues. I like that it is top loading. The cover is very secure. I like the look of it and how well it works for my bedroom. Good choice for the price.

Nice Product
Color: Retro
This item is nicely made and makes a good showing when placed on a table. I am very pleased with this and hope it comes in another color soon. I put this in my family room but would like to have a 2nd one, maybe different color. Very reasonably priced also.
