A tall, bottle-form, cuprous (copper-based) lusterware vase with an incredibly protean texture by contemporary New Jersey ceramic artist Richard Freiwald. The shimmering effects of lusterware are achieved with the application of small amounts of metallic oxides to glazed ceramics—and their re-firing in a reduction (low-oxygen) atmosphere. The second firing, at a temperature high enough to “soften” the under-glaze and break down the metallic compounds, leaves a very thin (perhaps 10- or 20-atoms-thick), largely metal, iridescent layer fused with the main glaze. Lusterware normally only uses a single color per piece, and the palette is restricted.

RICHARD FREIWALD (b. 1955) is a celebrated ceramicist and educator from Highland Park, N.J., noted for his refined craftsmanship and evocative designs. His work has been widely exhibited in New Jersey and New York and is held in numerous private and museum collections around the world. Freiwald has earned the particular esteem of collectors who appreciate objets d’art from the Art Nouveau and the American Arts and Crafts movements. His sometimes eccentric forms are made transcendent with the application of an astounding variety of experimental glazes.

Freidland received an M.F.A. from Mason Gross School of the Arts, the arts conservatory at Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, N.J., in 1982. He began his teaching career in 1980, finally retiring in 2020 from the Pingry School, a prestigious prep school in Somerset County, N.J., after 32 years there.

Freiwald has been the recipient of many honors, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Council for Basic Education, as well as the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and has held three endowed teaching chairs over the years. Much of his work embraces a decided Jugendstil aesthetic, often accentuated and heightened by crossover sculptural themes rooted in nature, fantasy, and mythology.

Freiwald is as much a technician as he is an artist, and he revels in the practical challenges involved in the creation of his art: the glaze chemistry, the firing schedules, and the difficulty of many of his forms, both the hand-thrown and the sculpted.

I am compelled to do this! – RICHARD FREIWALD

Very nice valet tray that gives a dresser or nightstand a much nicer look, and keeps EDC organized.
We’ve been using this sandalwood valet tray (with black "leather" inserts) for about five days, and it has quickly become a favorite for keeping the dresser top organized. It sits neatly on our tallboy dresser, staying put without any sliding, which is a big plus. The tray’s size is just right. This tray is not too bulky, but spacious enough to hold keys, watch, phone, etc., basically all the stuff carried in pockets daily. The wood has a smooth, polished feel, and the stain has a beautiful color which gives it a rich, elegant look that elevates the whole setup. What stands out most are the soft, leather-like inserts lining the compartments. They add a touch of luxury and keep items like my watch from getting scratched or sliding around with a slight bump. I also appreciate the thoughtful design of the notches cut out for phone charging cables. Having those notches makes it easy to keep a phone powered up without a mess of cords. This valet tray feels well-crafted and sturdy, though I would not mind it if the compartments were a tad deeper for bulkier items like a wallet. It’s practical and looks far more refined than the plastic trays I’ve used before, and I feel it gives an excellent value for the money, given today's pricing (July 20, 2025). For anyone looking to tidy up their space with something that feels upscale yet functional, this tray is worth a look.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ STARS! Great valet tray for keys and wallets
This valet tray is very classy and made a beautiful wood with nice little touches all around in terms of design. I really like this on my side table in our foyer, and we place our keys, wallets and odd knickknacks that we bring in from time to time. This makes it very easy so not forget or replace things if we have a designated area like this valet pad. This gets my "TRIED-and-TRUE" SOLID 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ STARS Rating! I only give five star ratings to items that I use and exceed my expectations for quality, functionality, ease-of-use, premium appearance/looks, durability, & when possible: Sustainability/Ease on the Environment. I hope my review helped you gain some insight and I appreciate you taking the time to read it. Thank you!

Great organizer! No more lost stuff!
We bought this for a friend who was always misplacing his keys, badge, wallet, etc... This has helped him get his every day carry stuff organized and he has not "lost" anything since.

Good value, but buyers should be aware that the metal base extends only on edges
I think this tray is a good value compared to other vendor's products that are $100+. I plan to keep it because it is a good value for me. HOWEVER, realize that the metal base does not extend across the full base of the cork liner. Metal pieces are only on the edge of long side of the liner. Also, the metal is lightweight.
