Is it hot in here, or is it just your writing? Birds do it, bees do it…so why is it so hard for writers to do it—or rather, to do it well? Writing about sex, like the very act itself, can be difficult, funny, embarrassing, intense, evocative, compelling, sad, political, boring, mind-blowing, exciting, and exhausting. How much is too much? When is it not enough? What will others think of us? And what about our own self-censors? We will consider these and other perils and joys of getting believable, effective, sometimes beautiful and literary sex scenes on the page. We’ll look at published samples, and cover tips and traps to avoid—starting with the fact that sex in literature is rarely just about the sex at all. Join us for this afternoon delight!

And note—this OnDemand webinar is about writing sex scenes in works of fiction and memoir, NOT about writing erotica or porn. Rated R for Real—all participants must be 18 or older.

What You Will Learn:

  • What makes a sex scene hot…and what makes it flop
  • The four organizing principles of a sex scene
  • How to write a sex scene that doesn’t read like a sex manual
  • When the reader needs to know “how it works” and when they don’t
  • Traps to avoid to keep your scene from being cringeworthy
  • How to discern the correct language to use in intimate scenes
  • That a good sex scene doesn’t have to be about good sex
  • That a good sex scene is always about more than the act itself

Who Should Attend:

Writers of any genre:

  • Who have been avoiding a sex scene in their work
  • Who have written a sex scene that they’re afraid to share
  • Who is wondering if such a scene is necessary in their work
  • Who struggle with whether or not an intimate scene belongs in and will benefit their story
  • Who wants to learn about craft and hone their use of sensory description (in sex scenes and beyond)
  • Who wants to develop a new tool in their writer’s toolbox

Cute Basic Tank That’s Easy to Dress Up or Down
Color: Taupe, Size: Small
This ANRABESS sleeveless tank top is a really cute basic to have in the closet. I bought it in 3 colors. I like the fitted ribbed style because it gives it a little more shape than a plain tank, but it’s still simple enough to wear with just about anything. The scoop neck is flattering without being too low, and the slim fit makes it easy to tuck into jeans, shorts, or wear under a jacket/cardigan. It’s one of those tops that works for everyday outfits but can also be dressed up a little with jewelry or nicer pants. The material feels comfortable and stretchy, and it has that casual summer look without feeling sloppy. I’d say it’s great for warm weather, layering, or just throwing on when you want something easy but still put-together. Cute, flattering, and comfortable — a great basic tank that I can see myself wearing a lot.

Great, well-fitting basic!
Color: Beige, Size: Medium
I love, love, love these basic tanks. They fit true to size. They’re really soft and comfortable and they’re such a great value. I have them in at least five or six colors. They look great on their own or under a cardigan.

Light weight, not thick or bulky, versatile, and perfect!
Color: White, Size: Small
Throw out all the tank tops you own cause this is the only tank top you will need from here on out. It is absolutely perfect. Let’s just say they understood the assignment. It is form fitting and pairs perfectly with lightweight sweaters that might be slightly sheer or even the new crochet type of open sweaters that need a tank underneath. It is the perfect stretch, perfect material and dressy enough to be worn on its own and upgraded with some jewelry and some classy jeans and has just enough sheen to look dressy and not like you’re wearing a workout top. I love , love this and it is my go to tank!

Comfortable, flattering wardrobe staple
Color: White, Size: Small, Color: White, Size: Small
I’ve tried a lot of basics, and this ANRABESS sleeveless scoop neck tank exceeded expectations. The fabric feels soft and breathable with a nice amount of stretch, and it has a flattering fit without being too tight or restrictive. The scoop neckline is classic and versatile, making it easy to layer or wear on its own. Stitching and construction appear well made, and it held up nicely after washing with no shrinking or loss of shape. Great quality for a basic essential, and a piece I can see reaching for often. Highly recommend.

The length is perfect. Nice and long.
Color: Yellow, Size: X-Large
These tanks are the perfect length. I love how they fit and feel. I bought these in 5 colors. Although, if you want to keep them long, I suggest hanging them to dry. Putting them in the dryer shrinks the length about 2 inches.
