Fighting for the Freedom to Learn: Examining the Nation’s Centuries-Old School Choice MovementThe school choice movement is often seen as a modern, partisan undermining of a cherished institution: public education. The school choice movement is often seen as a modern, partisan undermining of a cherished institution: public education. Fighting for the Freedom to Learn sets the record straight, revealing that the struggle for educational freedom is as old as America itself and rooted in a deep and enduring tradition of parents and communities shaping how children learn.

With contributions from 12 leading education scholars, this is a sweeping history of school choice in the United States. From Pennsylvania’s 1802 policy funding poor families to attend schools of their choice, to 19th-century “town tuitioning” programs in Vermont and Maine, to the post-COVID school choice explosion, Americans have long supported publicly backed educational options beyond government-run schools. Other highlights include the vital role of private initiatives in providing education to black Americans denied access to public schools, the long legal campaign for educational freedom, and more.

This book makes clear that wanting school choice is not a recent or radical idea but a consistent thread in the American story. For educators, policymakers, historians, and parents, Fighting for the Freedom to Learn offers a powerful reminder: Educational freedom, like liberty itself, is not a new trend—it’s a founding principle.

Good Coin / Keys Tray
Color: Midnight Black, Size: 7.5" x 5.5" x 1.5"
Loved this organizer so much that I ordered one for my Grandson for Christmas. Coins and keys don't make noise when dropped into the tray and it protects the wood of our dresser. Looks very nice too.

Great item, BUT…
Color: Bootlegger Brown, Size: 10.5" x 7" x 1.5", Color: Bootlegger Brown, Size: 10.5" x 7" x 1.5"
Do I love it? Yes. Is it well made? It certainly appears to be. Is the leather thick? Yes, I’d say definitely thick and sturdy. Do I like the color (Bootlegger Brown)? Of course I do, it’s gorgeous. It seems very well made. The corners are secured with black fasteners, which I think are going to better than the buttons in the long run that I’ve seen on others. It’s was this brand, or Hide and Drink for me. I went with these guys because it’s U.S. made, and hopefully American sourced leather. I bought the Large. My concern was that the XL might be too large for my nightstand. I measured it out and everything. However, I was not counting on the length and width to be measured from the end of the pinched corners, so I was a little disappointed about the size of the useable surface area. It’s not a big deal, but I wish that I’d have just spent the extra $5 and got the XL. If I we’re to get another, I definitely go with the XL unless you just want something on the smallish side, but still I suspect that they are larger that what most others are offering. At least these guys give you a choice of options.
