Nicaragua has a long history of cultivating coffee, beginning all the way back in 1790 when Catholic missionaries grew the plant out of curiosity. Since then, coffee production in Nicaragua has encountered several serious hurdles, such as the devastating effects of Hurricane Mitchell in 1998 as well as a coffee price crash and country-wide drought in 1999. Nevertheless, Nicaraguan coffee has stood the test of time, quality has steadily improved and roasters like Quaffee are increasingly sourcing great-tasting lots of specialty varieties like Pacamara, Maragogype, Bourbon and Sarchimor from the Central American nation.

This lot of coffee was grown at Finca Buena Esperanza, a central Nicaraguan farm run by coffee collective Rajuanse Estate which is overseen by producer Ramiro Ortiz and located in Matagalpa. This region is known to consistently produce Nicaragua's highest-scoring coffees. In fact, Matagalpa contributes roughly a third of the Central American country's coffee production. Due to its volcanic mountains and hilly landscape, the altitudes at which coffee is grown there varies between 800 and 1,400 meters above sea level, with cool temperatures and a high year-round humidity creating a perpetual Spring-like climate, ideal for Arabica trees.

Originally a sprawling American timber operation, today Finca Buena Esperanza follows strict protocols to produce excellent coffee. Lots are selected for harvest by their density, and sorted with a mechanical siphon after picking. This lot was fully washed to remove all skin and mucilage before fermentation, which typically produces clear cups with a bright acidity. After the dry parchment is sorted, it is sent to the Sajonia Estate Coffee mill, where Rajuanse Estate specialty coffees enjoy a dedicated, controlled environment before export.

Roasted at Buitenverwachting by our friends Quaffee, this washed Pacamara coffee represents a 5-year direct relationship between Quaffee and Ramiro Ortiz. Originally sourced through Zuka Green, Quaffee is proud to continue offering delicious coffees from the Nicaraguan producer and we are excited for you to try this unique offering from Central America.

Phaedon's tasting notes

Specialty lots from the Rajuanse estate in Nicaragua have become somewhat of a staple, both at Quaffee and at Cape Coffee Beans, and with good reason. These coffees are always very easy to enjoy. There's nothing wild about the flavour profiles but they are exceedingly pleasant, often sweet and nutty, much as this one is. My best brews with this lot were in my French press and my V60 pour-over dripper, but your mileage may vary, and I suspect coffee lovers will enjoy its comforting characteristics in most brew methods.

Quaffee’s notes

  • Taste profile: A medium mouth-feel with sweet stone fruit & gentle nutty taste.
  • Body: Medium
  • Roast: We soak the coffee to start, then allow a gently decreasing ramp rate during the roast into and through to first crack. Development time is 50 seconds.
  • Roast degree: Light – using my-tonino.com
  • Quaffee brews:
    • Espresso: 1:2.3 (28s)
    • AeroPress: 17g:180g
    • Plunger: 46g:800g
    • Pour over: 17g:300g (for a sweeter coffee)

Coffee details from Quaffee

“This coffee is from a lot of Pacamara grown on Buena Esperanza. It was planted in 2015. It represents a breakaway from traditional density by hectare, and spacing between plants and rows, thus, going out of the box and comfort zone for the engineers of the farm.

Rajuanse Estate commits to reforesting. Every year, they fill gaps within the farm with local trees from their reforestation nursery. Shade and humidity retention are imperative in the area.”

These things are SO comfortable! I feel like I’m walking on clouds 🩷 I ordered this tan and a black pair and I’m glad I did! I wish more colors were available in my size but apparently I got the memo late 😒. I usually wear a size 8 1/2 women and I ordered a 9 based on reviews with photos. The 9 fits wonderfully, my fat feet have room to spread when I’m walking and they provide adequate arch support. The color is as pictured, the shoe itself is cute, and I am able to walk normally without any discomfort…. If you are thinking about it, go ahead and get them girl they feel like heaven. Just order a half size bigger.

Love these shoes!
UGG dupes! These are amazing! I love how comfortable these are. I have worn these quite a few times now with no issue. Definitely worth the price! I have seen a couple of complaints about the durability of these, but at the selling price I would gladly repurchase these over paying for the UGG brand. They fit TTS. I will definitely be ordering these in the lighter color!

Sooo cute and comfortable!
I have two pairs of these sandals in pink and a cream color and they are sooo freaking comfortable! I have sciatic nerve pain so my leg gets fatigued fairly quickly from standing but I find these shoes allow me to stand longer and more comfortably. I’m hoping they’ll have the black sandals in an 11 back in stock soon because I want those as well 😆 If you’re looking for cute and functional footwear for the summer you can’t go wrong with these.

Not it.
Size: 10, Color: Nude, Size: 10, Color: Nude
I ordered these and was highly disappointed. The first pair I got, the velcro pieces were coming off. The threading was either coming undone or just wasnt there. On both shoes. I sent them back, had them send me a new pair, hoping it was just a fluke, cause those do happen. The next pair was better, but the corners on the velcro pads were still coming up, and i just didnt trust it to stay together. I sent them back and got a refund. As for fit, the first pair fit great, my foot was a little to skinny I think, or the straps were too loose even pulled as tight as they could go while still being able to connect the velcro pieces. It was something I could have probably worked with, they looked cute still and I still wanted to love them. The second pair, however, straps were still too loose. That didnt change. However, I got the same size, but this pair, my toes were too long for. Like, they were up on the little toe ledge thats supposed to frame your foot. That was uncomfortable. So I feel like the sizing was inconsistent. Another reason I opted to send them back for a refund. The shoes are cute, and i usually dont have issues with this brand. I have a couple pairs of boots from them that I absolutely love. But these sandals were a huge disappointment, unfortunately.

Comfy but run large!
Runs large IMO. I originally ordered a 7 and they were much too big and the straps were way too long. I ended up returning them and ordering a 6.5, and I love them. They are SO comfy and they go with just about everything. I will say the top strap gets smudged easily, but I’ve just been wiping them with a wet cloth and the smudges are gone.
