Tsushima Black Sharpening Stone
Legendary natural Japanese stone from the Sea of Japan for medium-fine refinement before final polishing.
Natural stone
Tsushima Black
The legendary Tsushima Black Stone is a natural Japanese sharpening stone found on the seabed of the Sea of Japan.
Sharpening range
Approx. JIS 4000
Tsushima Black has a medium to medium-high grit range, estimated at approximately 4000 JIS.
Slurry action
Dark gray slurry
The stone quickly produces a dark gray slurry, making it useful not only as a sharpening stone but also as a nagura-style stone.
Performance
Works finer than the nominal grit
Tsushima Black quickly releases a dark gray suspension with a moderately sticky texture.
The average abrasive particle size in the slurry is approximately 7.6 microns. Since sharpening is usually performed with loose abrasive particles, the stone works finer than its nominal grit rating suggests.
Finish
Soft gray finish with silver tone
Depending on the steel composition, Tsushima Black leaves very small, short scratch marks and gives the metal a light gray finish with a subtle silver tint.
This stone is recommended before final finishing with fine natural stones such as Nakayama.
Best stage
• Medium-fine refinement.
• Bridge before final finishing.
• Useful as a nagura-style stone.
• Suitable before fine-grained natural hones.
