In this piece, Gill transforms water – typically a flowing, form-dissolving element in his work – into a projection surface for the vibrant colours of the sky. As boundaries blur, sky becomes water, light becomes skin and perception becomes feeling.

As an artist who once temporarily withdrew from the public eye, Gill understands the search for new forms of inner truth. In ‘Colourful Horizon’, this is condensed into a painterly meditation on being one with the world, not as an escape, but as a deep understanding.

What Gill achieves here is more than a composition of colour and light. The woman sees nothing, and yet she seems to feel everything. Water, which otherwise often actively intervenes in Gill's work as a flowing, form-dissolving element, here becomes a colourful projection surface for the sky. One of James Francis Gill’s most intimate and expressive series and part of a body of work dating back to the 1960s, Women in Water sees Gill present a series of female figures in a suspended, almost timeless state. Poised at the edge of movement, immersed in water, Gill captures the women between air and depth, hesitation and courage – each composition an encounter. These moments are charged with both physical vitality and emotional resonance. The leap into the water symbolizes transformation, rebirth, and the intensity of fleeting experiences. Gill distils this ephemeral feeling into a visual language that is at once personal, poetic, and universal.
