Bulbophyllum unitubum is a small epiphytic orchid species described by J.J. Smith in 1929. It belongs to the section Hyalosema and is native to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Borneo, typically growing at elevations of 160–500 m on the lower trunks of large trees in rainforest margins and semi-deciduous forests.
Features:
-
Growth Form: This species features a creeping, elongated rhizome with cylindrical pseudobulbs spaced roughly 2–3 cm apart. Each pseudobulb tapers toward the apex and is rhombic in cross-section, longitudinally grooved or channeled underneath.
-
Leaves: A single leaf per pseudobulb, oblong and petiolate, with a channeled midrib and coriaceous texture, measuring about 12–14.5 cm in total length.
-
Inflorescence & Flowers: The plant blooms on a slender, basal or lateral scape around 14 cm (5½″) long, usually bearing a single large, widely opening flower held above the leaves. These blooms reach approximately 3½″ × 2″ (9 × 5 cm).
-
Flower Morphology & Coloration: The median sepal is notable for being oblong-ovate and elongated into a tail, densely pubescent with papillae. Overall, the flower is yellow with red streaks.
Care Tips:
-
Temperature & Climate: Bulb. unitubum prefers a hot-growing environment—warm temperatures and high humidity mimic its native tropical habitat.
-
Light & Mounting: Bright shade is best. Plants should be grown in open-mesh baskets or mounted to allow airflow and moisture retention. The medium should be well-ventilated.
-
Watering: Consistent moisture is essential—ample water without waterlogging. It thrives under humid, shady, and well-ventilated conditions.
