What is the difference between soot and creosote? Are they not the same?

Soot vs Creosote

Soot and Creosote are byproducts of the combustion of wood or coal in wood stoves or fireplaces. Physically, soot (image on top) is powdery to touch, brown or black, and only settle on the surface. Soot is formed from the smoke. As the smoke rises from the stove, the dry particles cling to the pipe lining. Due to its color and consistency, soot can soil your carpets or stain surfaces such as walls and floors. Cleanup can be extremely messy. Protect the area surrounding your wood stove from soot with heat-resistant stove boards. Creosote (image at the bottom) is a more severe combustion byproduct; it’s tarry, thick, and sometimes flaky. The smoke from flames travels upward and mixes with cold air and moisture from the top of the chimney. Once cooled down, it sticks to surfaces more like cement, making it harder to remove. Over time, the risk of chimney fire increases as the buildup gets thicker. Toss in a stick or sprinkle some soot remover ideally, once per week, onto a brisk hot, burning fire to prevent further buildup. Use Soot Remover Dry Sponge to quickly clean soot on exposed surfaces of wood stoves and fireplace walls. Diligently cleaning these surfaces will prevent the accumulation of baked-on dirt and soot.

How to install wood stove pipes, elbows, and accessories

Creosote vapors condense in the relatively cool chimney flue of a slow-burning fire. As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the flue lining.

Install stoves pipes, elbows, and other fittings with the crimped end toward the appliance.

Always insert the stove pipes to the stove collar with the crimped end or male end pointing down. It is necessary to have the stove component’s male end point toward the stove to ensure condensation and creosote travel down only within the pipe to prevent creosote leakage. Connecting pipes this way will result in adequate condensation. It will allow the creosote to flow within the pipe and return to the firebox to be burnt and fully dissipate. See picture. Exposed creosote is not only unappealing; it is also a fire hazard and a health risk. Avoid creosote leakage by properly installing a stove pipe.

How to adapt a large chimney opening to a smaller woodstove and vice-versa?

In general, the entire wood stove installation should run on a one-size stove pipes system. Not running the same size stove pipes or running the pipe line from a large stove opening to end on a small chimney pipe will cause draft issues and excessive creosote within the pipes that will reduce the efficiency of your stove. While a transition in diameter of stove pipes is not recommended, if one is necessary, make it at the farthest point possible from the stove appliance, i.e., at the chimney outlet. Installing the increaser or reducers away from the stove will maximize the evacuation of flue gases allowing warm air to rise steadily within the pipes. Note: Unless your appliance manual recommends it, do not use a reducer. Reducers can cause downdrafts.

Why is initial burn crucial before using a wood stove?

Initial Burn

The paint on newly bought and installed black matt stove pipes or accessories is not cured. The protective high-temperature paint will melt and peel off if the paint is not cured correctly, per instructions.

What are Type 1 and Type 2 Stove Boards?

TYPE 1 STOVE BOARDS have an R-value of 0. For use with appliances that require only ember protection. Do not use this stove board for appliances that specify Type 2 thermal floor protection or a specific R-value requirement.

TYPE 2 STOVE BOARDS are for use with appliances that require thermal floor protection or ember protection, or both. This stove board has an R-value of 1.5.

*The R-value must be equal to or greater than the R-value of the heat-producing appliance.

Tips

Choosing the correct brush type for your chimney

POLYSWEEP POLYPROPYLENE BRUSHES are economical brushes used in clay and stainless chimneys to remove the minor build-up of creosote in chimneys.

SUPERSWEEP PREMIUM WIRE BRUSHES are stiff wire brushes used in clay and masonry chimneys. The wire construction is designed to remove significant creosote build-up in chimneys.

PELLET STOVE BRUSHES are rigid fiber brushes made of Tampico used to clean stove flues and clothes dryer vents.

Creosotes and how to treat it

WHAT ARE CREOSOTES?

Creosote is a byproduct of burning plant-derived materials or fuels. When combustion happens in woodstoves, the rise of high-temperature smoke from the flames mixes with cold air and moisture from the top of the chimney. The condensation forms traces of coal tar in the pipes that solidify and get thicker over time.

The buildup of creosote is a fire hazard and health risk. Annually inspecting woodstove pipes is recommended to prevent chimney fires and downdrafts, avoiding toxic substances from entering your home.

Once inspected, what do I do next?

Treating creosote buildups depends on its severity. There are three (3) stages of creosote problems. Determine the extent of your creosote problem first to know how to treat it efficiently.

FIRST STAGE

At this stage, the creosote looks dusty, flaky and can be removed by a chimney brush. Catching the combustion particles at this stage and treating it is the best time before it gets worse.

Choose among Imperial Chimney and Pellet Stove Brushes to clean out the creosote from in flue pipes.

Toss in a stick or sprinkle some creosote conditioner ideally, once per week, on a low burning fire or bed of coal to prevent buildup and turn flaky creosote to brushable ash consistency.

SECOND STAGE

You will notice minor or formation creosote buildup. The creosote is thicker, starting to form layers, and it looks more like tar than soot. Sometimes, it may look flaky to an untrained eye, but the creosote has firmly adhered to the pipe lining. A more industrial and rigid approach to cleaning is needed. Rotary loops and drills are required to remove the creosote at this stage. Often, chemical solvents help loosen the buildup for easier removal.

Sprinkle some creosote treatment powder onto a low fire or bed of coal twice-weekly for four (4) weeks to break apart the creosote buildup. Then use a chimney brush or rotary loop and drill to clean out the loosened creosote.

STAGE 3

There is a large amount of coal tar encrusted on the pipe lining. The rotary loop cannot penetrate or spin thru the gunk, and treatments are deemed ineffective. At this stage, the buildup is dangerously flammable. The creosote is so thick that it acts like fuel, catching fire quickly.

The creosote can still be removed at this stage, but more often than not, the replacement of flue pipes is more cost-effective.

Prevent smoke leakage from woodstoves

REPLACEMENT GASKET

All woodstoves must have an airtight-sealed door to prevent air leakage, foggy glass stove door, and overheating.

We recommend that you replace the door gasket every year to keep your wood stove in good working condition. Before using your stove for the season, remove all the old gasket and run a new one around the stove door channel. Make sure that you use a gasket adhesive and press the gasket firmly into the channel. The gasket adhesive will secure the gasket in place for a long time.

Protect yourself

  • We recommend that you always wear protective gloves and follow product instructions closely.
  • Make sure to use cleaning and maintenance products on cooled-down surfaces or only at required conditions to avoid bodily harm.
  • Always read the labels and SDS sheets of our Stove and Fireplace Maintenance Products before using them. TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN INSTALLING WOOD STOVES

STOVE PIPE COMPONENTS

  • 18-in minimum clearance from combustible materials is required
  • 24-gauge, cold-rolled steel construction for durability and lasting performance
  • Black matte paint coating that resists heat, surface scratching, and chipping
  • Paint coating that tolerates maximum continuous operating temperatures of 700° F, with short exposures up to 800° F
  • Crimped male ends on most stove pipe components for snug pipe connections
  • Install crimped end down toward the stove to prevent condensation or creosote leakage
  • Secure stove pipe connections with at least three (3) self-drilling stove pipe screws

HEAT SHIELDS AND STOVE BOARDS

  • Heat Shields can reduce the clearance between stove pipe and combustible materials by 67%
  • Stove Boards or thermal hearth pads (Type 1 or 2) insulate and shields floors, walls, and ceiling from heat, hot coals, ashes, and soot
  • Stove Boards (Type 2), when used as a wall protector, require 1-inch clearance from walls; use wall spacers
  • Combination of stove boards, stove pipe, or elbow heat shields in any wood stove installation is a standard practice Scroll down for other types of installation.

Nice dog toy but batteries were bad
Style: Blinky Babble, Size: Small
Very cool product as we already had the blue babble one. Our puppy likes to watch it flash and make noise when she touches it. However, upon opening the item the same day we received it and removing the strip so it would turn on, it worked for less than a minute. After taking out the bottom screws, my husband saw corroded batteries. We are disappointed that the intact batteries were not good. Luckily we had ordered a 10 pack of batteries at the same time so were able to replace them and give the toy back to our puppy to play with. Shipment was fast. Item is very durable and both our dogs will have fun with it.

Brindle Boxer and yellow lab, 2 different approaches
Style: Talking Babble, Size: Medium
Our Brindle Boxer absolutely loves this toy! We got one of the small babble balls from a friend and "Baron" took right to it. Very funny watching him, once he realized that when he bumped or otherwise jostled it, it would talk! After about an hour of him tossing and "nosing" it around (not bad on carpet but on our hardwood floors, it can get a little grating), he started chewing on it. We're like, "OK, here we go, how long is this thing going to last now?". To our surprise, it's holding up pretty well. He's a chewer that can really munch down when he gets into a "groove" and it is taking a beating although it is not indestructible so keep an eye on it. There are 2 screws that hold the door in, which is crafted very well but be sure they are always in there tight. To avoid any issues, once we replaced the batteries the 1st time, we took out the screws and glued the door in and left the screws out. By the time the batteries are dead this time, the ball will be ready to throw out for sure. Not bad for longevity IMHO. Our dogs can chew a Kong ball up in a couple days once they get a crack in it. if there's a weak point on a dog toy, our dog will find it!....:-) Our other dog is Dusty, our yellow lab. Sweet loving dog with that "lab" mentality", all love and slobber :-) He looks at the Babble ball with mild amusement and walks on past it. Every once in awhile, he'll pick it up but that's usually only a ploy he uses when we're petting the "other one" (A name, we're sure Dusty uses when he refers to Baron). I imagine he would actually like this toy more, had Baron not taken it and cuddled it like his own new born baby the second it hit the floor and commandeered the 2nd one just as fast!! :-) The Small size one (A little larger than a golf ball) has ridges on it and takes a beating. Once it started looking haggard and the batteries started to die, we would put it up and only bring it out for short periods to prolong the life of it until we could find where these were sold. Baron had become "addicted to the darn thing! :-) He would whine and stare at it on the shelf for what seemed like hours until one of us would get it down and give it to him. Since the small one seemed just "bit small" for our Boxer for our tastes and surely too small for our lab, we decided to get the next size up. The Medium one has a smooth surface which also holds up very well although, that once "smooth surface", will start to resemble a Tennis ball after a while but it takes a licking and keeps on ticking! The "Talking" is amusing for us for about the 1st hour but it is a little loud with fresh batteries and can be annoying when watching TV or talking on the phone. After about a week though, the batteries start to drain some and the volume goes down a bit. Baron will only pick it up a few times a day from there on out so when he gets in the mood, he'll toss it around for about 15 minutes then leave it alone for a while. I can work with that. :-) All in all, We are impressed with the quality AND the "FUN FACTOR" for both us, and our Puppies! We're Babble ball fans for life! (Can we get a discount, if we buy them by the case? :-)

A GREAT FUN TOY FOR A FUR BABY, SMALL, MEDIUM OR LARGE.
Style: Blinky Babble, Size: Large, Style: Blinky Babble, Size: Large
I bought this for my 4 month old ShitZhu. It is the best toy I have bought for any of my 60 years of owning a dog. This little girl, Chrissy, named for my son who was 50 and passed away 10 years ago. She is the sweetest puppy I have ever had. She loves everybody, will go to anybody, child or adult, and loves other dogs, small - medium. She weighs 5 lbs now, but will grow to about 8-12 lbs. The best size for me, as I will be 86 in a few months and needed something small enough that I could handle it. My last dog at 15 I lost a year ago. It took me that long to see if I could handle a new puppy. I am doing awesome with her. It is me and her with my daughter seeing her every day on her lunch hour. This ball is something else. She plays with it all over the house, rolls it, moves it and even picks it up with her teeth. She gets so much exercise with this ball. I just bought one for my Niece's pup Poppy when she comes over. I also bought two large ones for my Son's two Healers that love to play ball. They haven't seen them yet. One for each that they will get tomorrow. I can't say enough about this ball. It makes watching the pups play with it for entertainment so much fun. This little one has made my blood pressure gone done. I have had dogs all my life and when I lost my last one, my blood pressure went up about 4 months later. I had never had high blood pressure. Since Chrissy came into my life (2 months ago) I now have blood pressure in the 120/78 range. She will keep me young so I can life a long, healthy and happy life. My Son in Heaven is making her into a little tom boy puppy. He would love her as a girl, but he has taught her how to drink out of a dripping hose. She is so fun to watch. If you have dogs of any size, you will love getting this ball for your fur baby and watch how they play with it. This is indeed a great toy. Have a happy life with your fur babies.

Toy encourages self play and exercise. BONUS: Provides hilarious entertainment for pet owner!
Style: Animal Sounds Babble, Size: Large
My Havanese loves this toy. It keeps him occupied for long periods of time. There are so many different animal sounds...some which are a bit annoying. The good news is because there are so many different sounds, we are all spared from hearing the shrill and annoying ones repeatedly. It is a "HOOT" to watch him chase the ball around. He bats the ball back and forth between his front paws almost as if he's playing soccer. He also has two "talking" babble balls, one small and one large. Havanese are people loving people pleasers so it's not surprising he seems to like human voice phrases of Talking Babble ball. I read many reviews on this product and the Talking Babble ball prior to purchase. Several review stated the purchasers pets had successfully chewed the ball causing the interior components to be exposed and thus caused a choking hazard. I ordered the toy anyway. My 9 month old Havanese is an active playful pup, but has barely made a scratch mark on either size of these balls. He doesn't chew on the balls he chases them. If your dog is a small breed, I do not think you need to be worried about this toy being a safety hazard. I only gave the product 4 stars because despite my purchase of the largest size, the ball still gets caught/lost under the couch, china cabinet, TV hutch, as well as the refrigerator and kitchen cabinets toe kicks....UGH. I purchase a fantastic pet playpen when I was in the thick of house training my puppy. I've tried putting the balls in the playpen, leaving both pen doors open. Although large enough for him to roll and chase the balls...he tries to flip them over the bottom lip of the pen and out the door. He has been successful in his attempts, but he has been successful at moving the playpen at least 4-5 feet while trying. Hmmm... It's frustrating, as I have STOP my activities & work often to retrieve the balls that have rolled under furniture etc. I've tried using long strips of cardboard boxes to block various problem ball "disappearsing" spaces. Not only is the cardboard unattractive, but it seems the spaces are never ending. 😜 I have considered buying plexiglass and cutting it into the necessary lengths etc. YEPPER...TO MUCH WORK!!! So my request is: " Pet Qwerks, My dog loves your product and so do I. Please make the same toy but in a larger size so that it does get caught under the bottom of average height furnishings ( 4.5 inches in diameter) . I suggest a 5" diameter ball."
