Chris and Andrea Mullineux are among the most internationally acclaimed winemakers in South Africa — their Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines in the Swartland regularly appearing on lists of the world's finest producers, their Syrahs and Chenin Blancs winning the kind of critical recognition that establishes a regional identity for a generation of wine lovers. When two winemakers of this pedigree decide to make gin, the instinct that shapes the result is different from the distiller's instinct: it is the winemaker's eye for terroir, the wine producer's specific understanding of how a place expresses itself in a fermented and distilled product, and the blender's conviction that the base spirit is as important as the botanicals it carries.

The founding decision that makes Geometric different from nearly every other gin in the Blackwell's section is the base spirit. Where most gins are made from neutral grain spirit — ethanol of near-absolute neutrality that provides no flavor contribution and serves purely as the botanical carrier — Geometric blends neutral spirit with Cape brandy, the grape-derived spirit of South Africa's wine country. The Cape brandy adds the smooth, fruity, round texture that winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux specifically recognize from their daily work with fermented grape: a richness, a roundness, and a specifically wine-adjacent fruitiness that standard grain-based gins cannot produce.

The botanicals come from the Cape Floral Kingdom — one of the world's six floral kingdoms, found only in the southwestern corner of South Africa, one of the most botanically diverse ecosystems on earth. Fynbos, buchu, kapokbos (Cape snowbush) — the wild herbs and shrubs that grow in the mountain fynbos and coastal scrublands that surround the Mullineux estates in the Swartland. These are the botanicals that give Geometric its most specifically and the most immediately South African aromatic identity: wild, herbal, floral, and entirely unlike the European and Asian botanicals that standard London Dry gins deploy.

The result: vibrant, zesty, and specifically Cape. Fresh juniper and earth followed by subtly spiced citrus. Juniper, Cape snowbush, and clove interlacing around the smooth, fruity texture of the grape spirit base. Cardamom and coriander pulling to a surprisingly long finish. The Curious Spirit called it "ideal for a martini — its prominent juniper beautiful in a Geometric Gin and Tonic." Whisky Exchange confirmed: "vibrant and zesty — wild herbs and florals give way to a dry, spicy finish." This is the gin that the winemakers made. And it shows.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Geometric Drinks was founded by three people with a shared passion for South African terroir: winemakers Chris and Andrea Mullineux — whose Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines in Riebeek Kasteel in the Swartland is one of South Africa's most internationally celebrated wine estates — and Jean-Baptiste Ruaud, a French/South African entrepreneur whose cultural and commercial expertise connects the Cape's artisanal production tradition to international markets. The founding philosophy was specific from the beginning: create a gin using the remarkable botanicals that can be found around South Africa's Cape regions, expressed through a base spirit that specifically honors the grape-growing heritage of the Cape's wine country.

The Cape Floral Kingdom — the fynbos biome that stretches across the Western and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa — is one of the most botanically significant ecosystems on earth. With approximately 9,000 plant species, 70% of which are found nowhere else in the world, it is the richest of the world's six floral kingdoms per unit area. Buchu — the small aromatic shrub with menthol and blackcurrant-adjacent aromatic compounds, long used in traditional Cape Malay and Khoikhoi medicine — is the most specifically South African and the most specifically unusual botanical in Geometric's program. Kapokbos (wild rosemary / Cape snowbush) — whose aromatic, slightly resinous quality resembles but is distinctly different from Mediterranean rosemary — adds the most specifically fynbos-adjacent herbal dimension. Together with the broader fynbos botanical additions, these South African plants give Geometric a botanical identity that cannot be replicated with botanicals sourced anywhere else.

The grape spirit base — Cape brandy distilled from the wine-grape harvest of the Cape's winemaking country — is the production decision that most directly reflects the Mullineux winemaking instinct. It provides the specific smooth, fruity texture that the Dunells and Whisky Exchange characterizations both identify as the most immediately distinctive quality of drinking Geometric relative to grain-based gins of comparable price. Small-batch distillation, 43% ABV / 86 proof, and the geometrically precise minimalist bottle whose design reflects the precision and craftsmanship within.

Critics Reviews

No widely published numerical critic scores are available for Geometric Cape Dry Gin.

The Curious Spirit (confirmed tasting note): "Botanicals are bound together with Cape brandy, a masterfully textured spirit which gives this gin its uniquely rich and round profile. Prominent juniper and earth notes followed by subtly spiced citrus. Juniper, Cape snowbush, and clove interlace around the soft-edged texture of the spirit. Cardamom and coriander pull the spirit to the back of the palate for a surprisingly long finish. Its length and texture making it ideal for a martini, its prominent juniper beautiful in a Geometric Gin and Tonic."

The Whisky Exchange confirmed characterization: "Vibrant and zesty — notes of wild herbs and florals give way to a dry, spicy finish."

Dunells confirmed characterization: "The gin is vibrant and zesty — notes of wild herbs and florals give way to a dry, spicy finish."

Blackwell's Wines & Spirits official listing: "Geometric Cape Dry Gin is a bold expression of South African spirit, marrying crisp juniper and classic botanicals with wild fynbos from the Cape Floral Kingdom — resulting in a gin that's as fresh as a sea breeze and as complex as a sunset over Table Mountain."

Perifly community: "Excellent taste and the beautifully designed bottle makes it a real treat. If you're looking for a sipping gin, I would highly recommend this."

Tasting Profile

Nose Crystal clear — the small-batch distillation and the 43% ABV producing a brilliant, clean luminosity. The nose opens with the specific combination that the Cape brandy base and the fynbos botanicals together produce most immediately: a bright bouquet of citrus and wild herbs that is simultaneously more aromatic and more specifically South African than standard London Dry gin aromatics. Fresh juniper leads — prominent, clean, and immediately identifiable as the foundational gin botanical. Earth notes add the most specifically Cape Floral Kingdom-adjacent secondary quality — slightly mineral, slightly wild, and entirely characteristic of the fynbos biome's specific terroir contribution. Subtly spiced citrus follows with the vivid, slightly tart quality of citrus peel alongside the fynbos's wild aromatic oils. Cape snowbush (kapokbos) adds the most specifically South African herbal dimension — resinous, slightly rosemary-adjacent, and entirely characteristic of the Swartland hillside scrublands where the Mullineux estates are located. Buchu adds the most exotic and the most specifically unusual secondary aromatic note — slightly menthol, slightly blackcurrant-adjacent, and entirely unique to South African gin production. Wild fynbos adds the broader herbal and floral complexity. Clove adds warm spice. The overall nose is "as fresh as a sea breeze and as complex as a sunset over Table Mountain" in the Blackwell's own characterization — entirely accurate and entirely appropriate.

Palate Smooth, round, and specifically grape-spirit-influenced — the Cape brandy base's most immediately palate-apparent contribution in a texture of unusual richness and roundness for a dry gin at this price point. The entry delivers the juniper most prominently — piney, earthy, and structurally confident at the entry level. Cape snowbush and clove interlace around the soft-edged texture that the grape spirit provides — adding the warm spice and the herbal complexity that gives Geometric its most specifically South African mid-palate identity. Cardamom adds the most exotic warm spice note. Coriander adds the classic gin spice backbone that anchors the more unusual botanical contributions. The soft-edged texture from the Cape brandy base carries throughout — the specifically smooth, fruity, and round quality that winemakers produce when they apply their instinct for balance and texture to distillation.

Finish Dry, spiced, and surprisingly long. Cardamom and coriander pull the spirit to the back of the palate in the Curious Spirit's most specific and the most accurate characterization — the finish's length the most immediately surprising quality for a gin at 43% ABV. The dry, spicy close — juniper, clove, and the Cape brandy's clean grape spirit warmth cycling through together — is the most specifically Geometric quality at the very close. A clean, dry finish with lingering juniper and delicate floral tones.

Serving & Occasion

Classic Cape G&T — the distillery's own recommended serve, paired with their Symmetry Tonics. 2 oz Geometric Cape Dry over ice in a Copa glass, premium tonic, garnish with citrus or fynbos herb. The Cape snowbush and buchu aromatics carry through tonic's bitterness in the most specifically South African and the most terroir-expressive gin serving format.

Martini — the Curious Spirit's most enthusiastic recommendation: "its length and texture making it ideal for a martini." 2 oz Geometric Cape Dry + ½ oz dry vermouth, stirred over ice, served up with lemon twist. The grape spirit base's roundness makes this one of the most specifically smooth and the most specifically wine-adjacent martinis available from any gin in the section.

Cocktail Suggestions

Cape Dry Martini (the most revealing serve) 2 oz Geometric Cape Dry · ½ oz dry vermouth. Stirred over ice, served up, lemon twist. The grape spirit base's texture and the Cape snowbush complexity are most completely and most specifically expressed in the martini format — the vermouth's botanical complexity adding to rather than competing with the fynbos botanicals.

Geometric G&T 2 oz Geometric Cape Dry · premium tonic · citrus wedge. Built over ice in a Copa. The most broadly accessible and the most specifically South African serve — the fynbos botanicals and the citrus brightness of the Cape Floral Kingdom finding their natural complement in premium tonic.

Cape Negroni 1 oz Geometric Cape Dry · 1 oz Campari · 1 oz sweet vermouth. Stirred over ice, expressed orange peel. The grape spirit base and the fynbos botanical complexity carry through Campari's bitterness in a Negroni of unusual richness and specifically South African character.

Easy to install. Sturdy enough for 2 large rambunctious kitties to play on and look very nice. I was working on a vertical play space for the cats and since these come in many sizes it worked great. I did add grip tape to some.

Not the best quality
Color: Rustic Brown, Size: 35 Inch, Style: 2 Pack, Color: Rustic Brown, Size: 35 Inch, Style: 2 Pack
The shelving unit was not as I had expected. It arrived damaged. The damage is on the under side though. They are hollow and not hardwood as I had expected. Save your money if you want something of good quality. These are like 3 pieces of pressed wood glued together. They are space saving and look great in my space. The mounting hardware it comes with was plenty enough to hang these but make sure you hang them in the studs if at all possible. Assembly was simple. It does come with a micro level. Which a kid or pet could accidentally swallow. It’s like pill capsule sized so just be careful when opening the package.
