A Winter Sky 1 & 2 were a little experiment I forced upon myself. I wanted to complete a work ‘alla prima’. That means ..’in one go’…essentially you’re working wet on wet, with the materials. The paint doesn’t get an opportunity to dry between layers – you don’t actually want that drying process to happen. Working with acrylics, in comparison to oils, it is much harder to achieve this state of flow – because of the shorter drying time experienced with acrylic paint. You have to work quick and be confident with your brushstrokes, make decisions on the fly, without ‘muddying’ up your colours. In other words – there is no room for error! If you make a mistake and you have to re-work an area – you are more than likely to make mud!

Because of the pace involved. The composition is quite minimal. The landscape is paired back to just the basics. I actually think it emphasizes the cliffs more in doing so, because that then becomes your focus.

Mount Wacondee rises to the right of these works. This gorgeous ‘butter’ yellow describes how the grass has hayed-off, reminiscent of a Monto winter.
