The flat bases allow the animals to be used in an upright position to better facilitate such play. One side of each piece depicts a male/female adult, with each reverse showing a related baby in a different pose, enabling children to sort and compare the animals based on their attributes. This can be enhanced by studying the artwork with a magnifier. There are also clues to the habitats of the animals, providing a stimulus for discussion and the sharing of ideas.
