The Label Speaks

‘Teikoku’ means empire or imperial.

India Pale Ale (IPA), of course, is a beer style borne from Great Britain’s period of imperial domination of India in the 19th century.

Japan too has an imperial past, not all of which is shameful.

The label artwork for Teikoku IPA is inspired by Japan’s naval triumph over Russia in the 1905 Russo-Japanese war – perhaps the first time in history that an Asian nation vanquished an Occidental power in battle.

Bryan's Brewing Notes

Sugar has long served as an important brewing ingredient in the traditional Ale cultures of England and Belgium.

I’m a big fan of incorporating sugar into the beer recipe.

We do it in two ways and for two reasons.

First, we sometimes add sugar to the wort kettle as a carbohydrate source in place of some of the mash grains.

Sugar is more cleanly and readily fermentable than the carbohydrates derived from grain starch conversion.

The goal of using some sugar here in place of a portion of malted grain is to increase the alcohol strength of the finished beer without contributing additional body or heaviness.

The sugar has the effect of drying (not sweetening) the beer and keeping it light in body relative to strength.

Second, we normally add sugar to the unfiltered green beer just before
packaging, supplying a fresh and fully attenuating carbohydrate source for metabolism and secondary fermentation by resident yeast.

By doing this, we naturally carbonate the beer through the CO2 gas produced in package during secondary fermentation.

Teikoku IPA is one of our beers in which we use sugar in both the aforementioned ways.

I believe the deft use of sugar contributes greatly to the overall balance and drinkability of this pioneering Japanese craft IPA.

Teikoku IPA is one of the original four year-round Baird Beers.

Debuting on hand-pump at our Numazu Fishmarket Taproom in January 2001 was: Fisherman’s Wheat Ale (which evolved into Rising Sun Pale Ale), Bay Steam (which morphed into Red Rose Amber Ale), Teikoku IPA and Kurofune Porter.

Adorable, sparkly little board book for youngsters!
Format: Board book
Quick book about sharing and friendship. Beautiful board book with sparkles on the fish. Including the cover, there are 6 pages to turn. I bought for the kids I babysit (age 11 months and age 4). Excellent little book for a child or teacher's library!

Classic Kids Book
Format: Board book
The Rainbow Fish is one of those children’s books that has been around forever for a reason. The story is sweet and the illustrations are beautiful. It is a great book to read with kids and one that seems to stick around in family libraries for years.

Great illustrations but not sure about the story
Format: Board book
My toddler is obsessed with all things fish, so when she picked out The Rainbow Fish from Amazon search. The illustrations are gorgeous, and my daughter is mesmerized by the sparkly, foil-like scales on the fish. She keeps pointing at them every time we read it, and it’s become a bedtime favorite just for the shiny colors! One thing I found a little odd is the story: the Rainbow Fish gives away all her beautiful scales to make friends. It’s a sweet message about sharing, but as a parent I admit it made me scratch my head a bit (I wasn’t sure if my toddler really gets why the fish parts with all her sparkles). Still, it’s a friendly tale and we enjoy reading it together.

A Timeless Classic That Nourishes the Mind!
Format: Board book
Where to even begin with Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"? This book has been a cornerstone of childhood for countless kids—and with good reason! First and foremost, the visual elements are stunning. Eric Carle’s unique collage technique brings the story to life in a way that instantly captures the attention of both young and older readers. His choice of bold, vibrant colors is just like eye-candy for the young ones. The tale itself is simple yet profound. A caterpillar eats its way through various foods, both healthy and not-so-healthy, growing bigger and ultimately transforming into a butterfly. On one level, it’s a delightful story about change and growth; on another, it subtly teaches children about the days of the week, counting, and nutrition. I appreciate how the book incorporates little "holes" in the pages to indicate where the caterpillar has munched through, adding a tactile element to the reading experience. My 5-year-old loves poking her fingers through the holes, making the story not just a visual but also a sensory delight! It’s also worth noting that the story is quick and to-the-point, making it perfect for bedtime or for little ones with shorter attention spans. But despite its brevity, it offers a wealth of topics to explore and discuss, from biology and metamorphosis to making healthier food choices. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" isn't just a book; it's an interactive, educational experience that both children and adults can enjoy together. It is a tale that transcends time and remains as relevant today as it was when it was first published. If you haven't introduced your children to this story yet, you're missing out on a classic that’s as nourishing for the mind as it is a delight for the senses.
