Introduction:
Turkoman carpets, as the name suggest, are produced in areas that is occupied by the Turkoman people; a landmass that is stretched from Turkmenistan/Iran border, all the way to Tajikistan/Afghanistan border. The production of these hand-knotted beauties, however, is not limited to the countries located at the eastern side of the Caspian Sea. Sometimes Turkoman carpets are made in Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and different parts of the Caucasus region. According to the Turkoman culture, carpets bring family members together and keep them warm by preventing the cold floor from bringing their spirits down. As such, they are considered to be an important household item.
Description:
Turkoman carpets are soft, lush, and easily distinguishable from other Persian carpets as they are usually designed with an all-over pattern. When it comes to the background, Turkoman carpet-makers use a variety of different dyes from beige and burgundy, to navy blue and black. Dying methods used by them, are quite similar to those employed by other Middle Eastern and Central Asian knotters and weavers. Saffron, sumac, chamomile, turmeric, almond, walnut, chestnut and henna are just a few example of the long list of, vegetable roots, leaves, and flowers that have been used by Turkomans to dye wool and cotton.
Price Range and Value:
Turkoman carpets have a wide price range; some are inexpensive, some are expensive, some are semi-antique, and some are high caliber antiques, also known as museum pieces, most suitable for personal collections.
Note:
The only thing that must be put into consideration before buying these Middle Eastern / Central Asian beauties, is their sheer level of delicacy. As such, it would be a more convenient choice for the buyers, to use their recently purchased Turkoman artwork for decorative purposes, as opposed to using it to cover the floor in a high traffic area.
