John Muir (1838–1914) ranks among America's most important and influential naturalists and nature writers. Devoted to the preservation of wilderness areas, Muir founded the Sierra Club and was active in the establishment of Yosemite National Park. This book, one of his most popular works, will delight environmentalists and nature lovers with its exuberant observations of Alaska and its inhabitants.
Travels in Alaska offers a memorable travelogue, enhanced by photographic plates from the original 1915 publication. Muir's commentary ranges from observations on the geology of Glacier Bay to the history and culture of the Chinook people to his discovery of the great glacier subsequently named for him. The naturalist captures the region's grandeur and beauty with the same fervor he expressed for the Sierras, making this book a must for nature lovers and adventurous travelers.
