Xarel-lo
Xarel-lo is een van de drie druiven die worden gebruikt in de blend van cava, de mousserende wijn uit (Noord)-Spanje. De naam komt waarschijnlijk van het Italiaanse ‘chiarello’, dat lijkt op het Engelse ‘claret’, een term die vroeger veel gebruikt werd voor de toen veelvuldig gemaakte lichte rode wijn uit Bordeaux.

De Wijn
Smaakimpressie
Helder, oranjeroze van kleur. In de neus aroma’s van grapefruit, aardbeien, frambozen en granaatappel. In het smaakpalet een fijne aanhoudende mousse, tonen van klein rood fruit en iets van geroosterde noten, die gepaard gaan met een afdronk met verfrissende zuren.
Vinificatie
Begin september worden de druiven handmatig geoogst. Daarna worden de druiven ontsteeld en ekneusd en krijgen ze een koude inweking van ongeveer 16 uur. Vervolgens worden de druiven pneumatisch zeer voorzichtig geperst en laat men het sap een temperatuurgecontroleerde (15°C) alcoholische gisting ondergaan op roestvrijstalen tanks. Enkele maanden na de oogst wordt de jonge wijn geassembleerd, wordt er suiker en gist aan toegevoegd en wordt hij gebotteld en afgesloten met een kroonkurk. Tijdens de tweede gisting ontstaat koolzuurgas (prise de mousse) en pas na een rijpingsperiode op de ‘lie’ (sur lattes: de flessen liggen op houten stokken) van minimaal 15 maanden wordt het gistbezinksel verwijderd (dégorgement) en wordt er tot maximaal 12 gram suiker (dosage) toegevoegd om aan de smaakaanduiding ‘brut’ te voldoen.
Culinair Advies
Als aperitief, bij de lunch, recepties of bij tapas, chocolade en vers fruit zoals aardbeien en bessen.
Wijnhuis
‘Als je je lot in eigen hand neemt, geef je betekenis aan de nalatenschap van je voorouders.’ Aldus Pere Ventura. Zijn familie drukte een stempel op de historie van de Spaanse cava. Het was zijn overgrootvader die aan de wieg stond van de eerste Spaanse cava gemaakt volgens de champagnemethode. Zijn opa en vader gaven met hun kennis van de wijngaarden en het land op hun beurt vorm aan de verdere ontwikkeling en perfectionering van het proces. Op basis van innovatie en kwaliteit bouwt Pere Ventura met zijn knowhow verder op deze fundering. Binnen zijn bedrijf is er alleen plaats voor het allerbeste wat cava te bieden heeft. Op de op 250 meter hoogte gelegen wijngaarden in Penedès, ten zuidwesten van Barcelona, tussen de Middellandse Zee en de bergen en met een ideaal klimaat, wordt met respect voor moedernatuur gewerkt. Er worden geen pesticiden gebruikt. Werkzaamheden worden nauwkeurig gepland, zodat alleen het beste fruit geoogst wordt voor de cava’s. Zoals Pere Ventura zegt: ‘Het land liegt nooit!’
Regio
Catalonië is een van de grootste, bekendste en meest dynamische wijngebieden van Spanje. Het is met archeologisch onderzoek bewezen dat de Grieken hier voor het eerst in Spanje wijn maakten. Men zegt dat de revolutie die de Spaanse wijnbouw de laatste decennia heeft doorgemaakt, ontstaan is in Catalonië.
Catalonië is een vrij groot wijngebied, waarbinnen negen subregio’s vallen. Het ligt rondom Barcelona bij de Middellandse Zee, maar begint al direct onder de grens met Frankrijk. Vanaf daar, hier en daar onderbroken, reiken de subregio’s zo’n 300 kilometer naar het zuiden. De meeste wijngaarden liggen redelijk in de buurt van de zee.
Druivenras
Macabeo
Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid komt macabeo uit het wijngebied Vilafranca del Penedès in Catalonië. Daar is de druif nog steeds veel te vinden en wordt hij samen met paralleda en xarel-lo gebruikt voor de productie van cava, het Spaanse antwoord op champagne. Daarnaast wordt de druif ook geteeld in Rioja, Navarra en Rueda. Hier wordt hij ‘viura’ genoemd. Buiten Spanje is de macabeo ook te vinden in het zuiden van Frankrijk, met name in de Roussillon en de zuidelijke Rhône.

40lb Lab Retriever Loves It!

My 40lb Labrador Retriever loves her Nylabone. She DOES chew threw it and it's important to note that it IS plastic, so the product description mentions it should NOT be ingested. The bone eventually does get worn down and she does "bite, then lick" the bone, but she doesn't seem to ingest the entire bone over time and isn't interested in the small, ant-sized pieces of the bone she's carved off with her teeth.
However, over time, the bone does shrink and the edges do get very sharp, so be wary of that. It's not going to hurt anyone, but if you step on it or if it brushes you the wrong way, it could scratch you. Other than that, it's a cheap toy that lasts about a month or so for my dog–a dog that chews up most plush toys pretty quickly.

If Your Dog Can Rip The Hood Off Your Car--This Is The Dental Toy For Him/Her
I am always curious about buying the "number one best seller" that Amazon lists in any product category. And when it's an add-on item offered at a reasonable cost, I'm even more curious.
From reading the reviews, it appears that some dog owners ordered this item and were disappointed in it for a number of reasons, primarily because the 'hardness' of the toy caused dental problems. Obviously no one wants to buy a dental toy that actually causes teeth problems. However, some small breed owners must not be aware that their particular breed is subject to dental issues regardless of what toys they chew. Just off the top of my head, this type of problem often occurs with Yorkies, Chihauhaus, and Chinese Cresteds. You can use virtually any dental care method in existence and still watch your Chinese Crested's teeth fall out.
So small breeds shouldn't be given tough Nylabone toys like this Dinosaur model. If you watch any dog chew on this particular toy, you will quickly notice how small his/her teeth are in relation to the toy, and you will probably be surprised by the leverage and power he/she puts into each bite. They gnaw, they gnash, they continue to work at it until those tiny teeth lose the battle against the tough Nylabone. Comparing this to human teeth, everyone knows someone who fractures/cracks a tooth somehow. That's because our front "chicklet" teeth bite down on something hard, get broken from falling on your face, getting hit in the mouth, having teeth weakened by cavities, and from not seeing a dentist/hygienist on a regular basis--usually because we're afraid of a little pain.
We're always looking for relatively tough dental toys for our 182 pound Cane Corso named Dante. He tears apart any toy we buy him, usually in a matter of minutes. But this particular Nylabone Dura Chew has survived for months now. If you look at the size of his teeth, length and thickness, you will see a dog with the teeth and jaw muscles strong enough to tear the hood off your car--which is exactly what he did to our Prius. So if your dog is capable of ripping hoods off cars, this treat should be good for your pet monster. Just keep an eye on the toy so that you can toss it before it breaks down and is swallowed.
